@LifeAtPurdue administration brought no legislation to the Purdue Senate regarding changes to mode of instruction in COVID. There has been no Senate vote. But the Senate is the faculty representative body, and its primary responsibility is for instruction. #facultydecide #aThread
Has your dept/school voted on legislation saying how your unit will determine f2f or online instruction? No? This is a mistake by your dept head. #facultydecide Without a vote, they decided push the administration's policy without faculty consent. Could have done rule departure.
The administration sets the time and location of your class - you decide what you want to do with that. Maybe you want to use less time, or meet online, maybe not. #facultydecide. Think they have time to check up on everyone? Or pull you from your house to teach f2f? Um, no.
Just because the Provost and President didn't follow the right steps for enacting instructional changes due to COVID doesn't mean you have to succumb to their HR approval process, teaching in a mode that you don't want. This process is irrelevant for how you decide to teach.
Want to teach online, but HR turned u down? Put it in your syllabus: "This course will be taught in a hybrid mode. We will begin meeting synchronously online and will shift to face-to-face should I determine conditions warrant and it is in your educational interest to do so."
You are faculty. You are in charge of your course. You are the expert in how how your students will best meet your course's educational objectives. Face-to-face, within safety bounds? Cool. Online using state-of-the-art teaching techniques? You go. But #facultydecide. #endrant
But if you decide to teach in a mode that you don't want, when faculty bodies were not asked for a vote, you are helping to enable the administration to keep riding roughshod over shared governance. They didn't get a vote from the Senate. That decision cuts both ways.
Teach how you decide, within safety rules. Contact @AAUPPurdue if you get grief from your dept head. We're happy to observe and document meetings, and inform you about Purdue policy. We can send letters of support reminding heads about Statement on Government.
Just because they don't know anything about it, and have given up on shared governance doesn't mean you should. This is about academic freedom, shared governance, and your right as an expert in your field. Side together, and pass it on. #facultydecide. #endofrant
