There is now warmup circle of people running in a circle in anticipation of going on a walk! There was a dog who got excited, so for a moment there was a barking dog running in the circle too. The humans said “ACAB!” The dog said “bark bark bark bark!”
We are marching. Current chants “Black Lives Matter” “say his name: George Floyd!”
Families are cheeeing from doorways “Out of your homes and into the streets!”
Worth noting that Laurelhurst is a pretty wealthy, and pretty white, neighborhood. Seen quite a few grey-haired folks in polos shirts clapping and waving from their porches.
And the crowd has arrived at the sheriff’s office. Crowd chanting “how d’you spell nazi? PPB!”

Sheriffs in front of the parking lot and bees being handed out since Portland is a bee hive. Also the way this officer is interacting with this dog sculpture is odd
A small squad of riot-gear clad officers on the west side of the building
This particular swarm is now chanting “leave our hive,” pointing out that over 80% of PPB officers don’t live in the city. This is quickly followed by “quit your job (go home!”
“40% of cops beat their wives,” the crowd is now chanting. “Look to your left, look to your right, one of those guys Beats their wife!”
“say her name! Kendra James! who killed her? PPB!” And “defund Police, fund schools!” Are now the chants. This building is a joint MCSO/PPB facility. Mike Reese, the current (elected) sheriff is also the former Police Chief.

Roof cop was shining a flashlight at the crowd. Crowd started chanting “fuck you roof cop.” Roof cop then stopped shining a light, and someone in the crowd turned on their own light, which projects “DEFUND DISARM DISBAND” on the wall of the Penumbra Kelly Building
LRAD now warning people not to enter the southeast precinct. Crowd answers with “whose streets? Chinook streets! Where do we stand? Stolen Land” and “Not my neighbor, not your town, fascist cops are going down!”
The chant “blue lies murder” just started up, and it definitely took the crowd a few rounds to realize that this was not a “blue lives matter” chant, and pick it up.

I don’t want to alarm anyone, but there’s a mattress. Historically, the PPB doesn’t like mattresses. And true to form, police just declared an unlawful assembly

The crowd just found another crowd to walk with. And there was much rejoicing.
Someone in the crowd hollers to the neighborhood “we live in a police state! Let’s do something about it please! It can happen here!” Someone else hollers “it is currently happening!” Then more folks arrived, with lacross sticks, and there was much rejoicing.

Riot lines just returned north on 53rd. Some very nice folks helped out with a front yard hose eyeflush.
Feels noteworthy that this is @DAMikeSchmidt’s first day, and the ppb have been very comfortable macing journalists, slashing motorists tires, but seem to have performed almost no arrests.
@DAMikeSchmidt, for the record, @FancyJenkins is the reporter who just got maced while clearly marked, standing aside, filming.

So one is forced to imagine that there are worse things happening to people the police *aren’t* legally prohibited from assaulting right now.
I have frequently noted the disproportionate force used by sheriff’s deputies and PPB at these events. However, tonight I want to stress that I saw absolutely no physical aggression by protesters to provoke the police charge or unlawful assembly announcement.
It appears to be the position of the PPB that it is unlawful to peaceably assemble at a police precinct and petition the police, who are in many senses employees of the government, for a redress of grievances. And the freedom of the Press ain’t doin too hot either.
So a house with two really cute kitties in the window had these out front. And this pack of rather dehydrated journalists thinks that is just wonderful. All Cats Are Buddies.
