You’ve been conditioned to see happiness as something to chase, rather than something you can create.
Here are 3 hard truths that will change your perspective on happiness (no. 3 will shock you)...
1 - Stop chasing happiness
The danger of obsessively seeking happiness externally is that it makes you vulnerable to harmful vices, mimetic desires, and self-induced mental illnesses.
Drugs, stimulants & depressants are popular because everyone’s desperate to get a dose of happiness by any means necessary; but that’s just unhappiness on makeup.
Worrying about happiness is a sure way to remain unhappy.
You build muscles by progressively overloading on weights, you build happiness by gradually pushing the boundaries of your capabilities.
Happiness, love & passion aren’t things you find, they are choices you make.
2 - You aren’t unhappy, you just have poor emotional control.
Inner peace is the gentler and more stable form of happiness.
The most effective way to create consistent happiness is to master the art of equanimity.
All human emotions are ephemeral -
When you cling to sadness, you prolong your suffering unduly. When you try cling to happiness, you’ll suffer when it inevitably disappears.
People are known to do stupid things when overly excited - like driving under the influence of alcohol.
They also do ridiculous things when overly depressed - like committing suicide.
Stoicism isn’t about becoming emotionless. It’s the art of being detached from ephemeral emotions, with the deep understanding that everything passes. Reaching this level of maturity helps you maintain good judgment at all times.
3 - You don’t really want to be happy.
Shocking right?
The unspoken truth is that you are only as happy as you permit yourself to be in every moment.
It’s not the situations that distress you, but your perceptions and attitude towards them.
Happiness is intrinsic, and you expose it by removing ALL the conditions you have placed on it.
If you really want to be happy, why not Now?
You may think you have to wait for that perfect person, job or vacation to be happy - but you’ll only ever attract these things when you are in a more vibrant state of being. This is because unhappiness makes you uncreative and ineffective.
Understand that nothing can make you happy forever. So permit yourself to be happy unconditionally for only 5 minutes - no buts, no whens, no ifs.
Gradually increase that time every single day - In a year you will have mastered hacking your own bliss...
