The word “lockdown” can induce visions of *everything* completely shutting down; people stuck at home with no jobs and no social interactions; people suffering more now than just leaving the status quo as it is.

That does *not* have to be the case.

A short thread
__________
2/ We need to be smart.

We know transmission happens several magnitudes higher indoors than outdoors.

We need *better* lockdowns.

This means allowing for safe, outdoor socialization while shutting down high risk, non-essential indoor activities, immediately. Cc @RanuDhillon
3/ This means either *paid leave* for 3-4 weeks, OR repurposing people to work in public health response for those that can during those weeks.

This means all people—not just healthcare workers— who are working in essential services have adequate PPE.
4/ This means putting on complete pause the distractions of trying to re-open schools, sports, or anything else that is bound to fail while community transmission is uncontrolled.

This means political commitment from leadership to stick this through until transmission is crushed
5/ This does *not* mean you cannot see other human beings— strictly outdoor safe socialization should be encouraged. Leave parks and beaches open.

This does *not* mean the government forces you to stay at home w/ no $$ protections. They owe us that protection.
6/ “Lockdown” as a word may elicit memories of what happened in March/April. We are in August.

We have a stronger understanding of transmission & of what went wrong with initial lockdowns.

We need to do things diff— both from what we did before, & from what we are doing now.
