If you have time at 1ET today, I urge you to listen to @CMichaelGibson on The Democratization of Medicine: Open Access, Social Media, AI, Apps, and Empowering the Patient as the Future of Clinical Research. I have seen the slides…incredible. @texhern dukemed.webex.com/dukemed/j.php?… @NIH
@CMichaelGibson @texhern @NIH The journey of @CMichaelGibson from Stillwell, OK to Boston… and how fortunate we are that he turned his attention to medicine and art and advocacy. An extraordinary path, with great contributions along the way.
@CMichaelGibson @texhern @NIH Listening to @CMichaelGibson talking about his frustration when a journal told him that they owned his figures and he was limited in his use…and when colleagues had to pay to see his scholarship. Questioning the copyright laws… and how they have restricted knowledge flow.
@CMichaelGibson @texhern @NIH So @CMichaelGibson making the point…not everyone can afford copyright information, especially in resource-poor countries…and questioning our current approach, esp when knowledge equals opportunity for better health.
@CMichaelGibson @texhern @NIH Another point from @CMichaelGibson … we are moving from publish or perish to collaborate or perish. [If only…]
@CMichaelGibson @texhern @NIH And @CMichaelGibson talking about #Wikidoc… and open access textbook - amazing… wikidoc.org/index.php/Main…
@CMichaelGibson @texhern @NIH And @CMichaelGibson talking about how efficient social media is at reaching the public… and patients… and our role as health professionals in spreading good science and helping to advocate for the public.
@CMichaelGibson @texhern @NIH Love this… @CMichaelGibson making the point that we need to earn the trust of informed patients these days… through 2-way conversation. Not paternalistic relationship, 1-way conversations and partial information.
@CMichaelGibson @texhern @NIH New ways of doing trials will go direct to people… and obviate the delays and expensive of more traditional paths…but we will need to earn trust here too… many studies will be able to convert to this approach.
@CMichaelGibson @texhern @NIH And @CMichaelGibson talking about the challenge of #AI for medical decision-making…though he has a nice article showing how it might work. My view is that it takes a good problem and a strong multidisciplinary team… and the right data. And we have not solved it yet.
