[THREAD]Oftentimes in clinical psych, many people wonder is it genetic or environmental? We can’t really answer that because those two don’t exist separately from one another. Genes need an environment to activate and we now know the environment can also activate genes through
epigenesis. Also, we suspect that there are genes involved in mental health but for the most part we haven’t identified them yet. We can look at family history but that can also be either genetic or environmental. We all have our risks and protective factors that can make us
vulnerable to mental health issues. Each one of us will have different risks and different protective factors. That’s why it is hard to simplify mental health to genetic, environmental or situational. We can’t separate them!
