This #SundayMorning we're discussing the alleged poisoning of Alexei Navalny. What's the evidence this high-profile Putin critic was poisoned and what are the implications of this less than subtle assassination attempt?

Why Alexei and why now?

(2) Alexei is a vocal, highly-visible Putin critic with millions of followers on social media. He's been leading opposition against the Kremlin since 2008.

Why target him now?
Actually, attempts against Alexei's life have been escalating the last 2 years.

(3) Alexei was jailed in 2013 but it wasn't until Trump took office that things escalated. In 2017, someone threw antiseptic in his face. In 2018, he was the victim of suspected poisoning while being detained. The Kremlin said it was an "allergic reaction"

(4) There are several reasons to believe Putin may have attempted to poison Alexei and it's not just evidence that the Kremlin has poisoned others before, including deploying toxic nerve agents on foreign soil

Putin is facing widespread dissent in Russia

(5) It's plausible Putin took a peek at Belarus and decided the Russian people might get ideas. So he's moving against high-profile opposition leaders to send a message.

The Kremlin has been grabbing members of Pussy Riot recently in very public fashion.

(6) It's also probable Putin understands he needs to move NOW because a new administration might punish his regime.

This might be Putin's last chance to crush dissent & slip under the radar amid noise from the pandemic & the abdication of US leadership.

(7) I don't think there's much doubt Navalny was poisoned but let's look at the evidence. Doctors have told the press tests indicate Alexei wasn't poisoned & that it was probably some blood sugar episode.

This doesn't sound much like a sugar crash to me.

(8) And why would you choose to move him in an isolation pod typically used to transport infectious patients if you were so confident he wasn't poisoned?

Navalny's staff say they believe the poison used is a danger anyone who comes in contact with him.

(9) The Kremlin is playing coy here by initially denying requests to transport Navalny out of Russia for treatment and then Putin granting the request more than a day later after traces of the poison might no longer be detectable in Navalny's bloodstream.

(10) Will we ever know definitively if Alexei Navalny was poisoned? Probably not.

But given Putin's history, the growing opposition in Russia, the situation in Belarus, and the closing window of time before the election, all signs point to yes.
