This #SundayMorning we're delving into a question that's on everyone's mind these days. With only 51 days left until midterms, the forecast for Dems to take the House is looking pretty sunny.
Is it possible for Dems to take the Senate as well?
(2) First off, anything is possible. Trump wasn't favored to win the Presidency either and here we are. I guess the real question becomes is it likely for Dems to take the Senate in the upcoming midterms.
I love today's lectionary readings -- which contrast foolishness and wisdom. From the book James, we get this warning about thoughtless speech:
"How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell.... /2
....For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue-- a restless evil, full of deadly poison." 3/
This #SundayMorning we're digging into a question that has perplexed several news organizations looking into Brett Kavanaugh's financials.
How do you rack up between $60,000-$200,000 in credit card debt on baseball tickets and then make the debt disappear a year later?
(2) First off let's explain what the hell is going on here. Brett Kavanaugh's finances are super suspicious. Kavanaugh makes about $250K as a judge and from lecturing at Harvard, but he also owes on a $1.2 million home that has been refinanced twice.
“By his own standard, Kavanaugh should clearly be impeached,” writes Lisa Graves in @slate. Graves wrote some of the stolen memos that Kavanaugh lied to the Senate about. (via @maddow) #ImpeachKavanaugh#BlockBrett
.@NPRWeekend just interviewed @KSPrior, because we can never highlight enough far-right extremist views. Prior actually claimed Trump and @HillaryClinton were equivalent in their treatment of women (!!!) and applauded her students being disenchanted with the electoral system.
.@KSPrior teaches at Jerry Falwell's #racist@LibertyU where last year graduates returned diplomas en masse due to Fallwell Jr's grotesque support of Trump.
feel free to mute me, I'm in the mood to livetweet every mendacious and foolish thing in the New Yorker piece on the Ronell affair. It'll last about 30 minutes is my guess. #SundayMorning#IDontDoCrosswords /1
the objective, journalistic setup is at pains to complete some contradictory tasks. On the one hand, the 2 parties are described in a way to make them seem intractably inequal in experience, work status, and most importantly, intellectual gift. Note: could use more "accounts." /2
The inequality missing from this objective lol opening & never mentioned is that one of these people was the other person's boss (as an advisor of dissertations, I do not make this claim casually), had power over their future employment, & had an ethical burden of care. /3
This article about the profound influence of Virginia economist James McGill Buchanan (an intellectual descendant of John C. Calhoun) on ascendant American oligarchy is chilling. We’re already quite far down this destructive path.
Buchanan’s extremely, self-servingly dark view of human nature, which “justified” his rejection of any search for the public good through politics, is a hallmark of authoritarianism. This is why Christian nationalism and oligarchy dovetail so comfortably.
Advocates for utopias, which in attempts at implementation always trend to authoritarianism, share a rejection of politics, a desire to be free from politics, even from freedom as most understand it. Libertarianism and theocracy are conservative utopias. #EmptyThePews#Resist
The soil where #FromDeathtoLife began to grow was a church I was pastored 7 years ago. I didn’t know I would write a book then obviously. But as I taught on what it meant to be a Christian I was surprised as a 24/25 year old to see so much push back.
I preached Lordship salvation and that the mere recitation of a prayer didn’t save you. I guess I should have known but I thought preaching the Bible would be accepted by an established SBC church.
When I accepted the call to pastor my wife told a lady in the church that we were excited to see what the Lord would do. The lady responded with a sinister “we’ll see.”
