I get that everyone is out here trying to make a way financially in the business of music, but look here. PRODUCERS/DJs there's a way to speak correctly to talent (MCs, rappers, vocalists) if U want to barter work-for-hire. Rude comments when U are the one asking for a "feature"
are not the biz. "I don't pay rappers" sounds like A HOST OF FUCKERY AND THE ANTITHESIS OF BUSINESS. It sounds, from the jump, that NO ONE is going to make A THIN DIME. If U mean there is no budget, why not say that in the initial outreach for the "feature"? Barter is cool...
We like to trade great production for dope lyrics all day. HOWEVER no cash budget does not mean U don't a) complete a simple work for hire agreement b) collect everyone's publishing information and REGISTER THE WORKS c) get emails for distrokid to make sure all get their pieces.
Sometimes there is a language barrier and I do get that. A lot of Europeans have indie labels, production companies, etc. and they REACH OUT TO U.S./Canadian MCs to "WORK"...to paraphrase Planet Asia it's good to "get it poppin' with the pilgrims" out there BUT KNOW THIS ...
they have $$$, resources, companies, businesses, nice apartments/homes, & their "poor" is like an upper-middle class U.S. household. THEY CANNOT MAKE EUROPEAN HIP HOP ALBUMS, they NEED the Black Wo/Man's magnetic, charisma, science, knowledge, wisdom, understanding ON THE TRACK.
You have the advantage in these negotiations. Don't come from a place of lack and sell yourself short. Let's say the EuroLabel/Producer hits U with the folly that there is "no budget". U decide U want to be known in Bulgaria, so U say send the track. Beats are ok. They say ...
They are self-producing the EP, it has 7 songs. There are 6 other MCs. So we look at this the way we look at any other splits. They own the full 100% of the production pie (unless U offer a sample or write a melody for the hook, any composition other than lyrics). Then the LYRIC
pie, the 100%, is to be divided equally amongst U and the other 6 MCs. so that's about 14.3% of the lyric portion. but wait. DON'T LET THESE PIRATES EAT OFF YOUR PLATE. 14.3 PERCENT OF SPLITS/ROYALTIES *AND* AN EQUALIZED PORTION OF SALES. they can scrape 50% off sales then divvy
the remaining 50% of sales out 14.3% to each MC after recoupment as per usual BUT EXAMINE THEIR CONTRACTS. REQUIRE REPORTING OF SALES FROM THEIR DISTROKID AND ANY LABEL/DISTRO. ASK FOR BILLS OF LADING. These people are thieving by nature and will tell U they made 150 vinyls...
when there really are 500 pieces. They will tell U "oh sorry the album didn't sell". FUCK THAT, SHOW RECEIPTS, FOOL. I'm physically tired of this game, U later see the producer, DJ (compiler, mixtaper) or "label" running around shopping for sneakers in Japan OFF WHAT YOU MADE...
I'm not saying only people in europe do this. there are nuff americans doing the same thing, 2 me even worse hanging around the MCs/rappers condos/breaking bread w/them, smiling in the face, whilst stealing too. smmfhijab. however the phenomenon with the overseas cats has to end.
if U need simple work 4 hire agreements, as a producer, singer, MC/rapper, studio musician, etc. U may use your googles. If U want me to review something U found online, or don't grasp publishing or haven't done yours or don't know how to use distrokid & bandcamp, I want to help.
Just like a Mother. I've considered doing small seminars #onhere or on Zoom since we're all in quarantine anyway. Like a class, each one teach one, because some of U know a thing I don't, and vice versa. I do very much charitable work and pro-bono help. People call me an Angel...
I learned this from @RapCoalition Wendy Day. The difference is Wendy did big deals for Master P & many more, & got paid. I've NEVER been paid. Everyone who has had me GM a label has paid me $500/month. EVERYONE. I never charge clients a fair rate, I am too caring, I give too much
So *if* we do this together, and U ain't got it right now, I get that. I understand, I care. Everyone (except me) has mouths to feed, that's THE MAIN REASON I DO THIS, FOR THE CHILDREN, so they don't have to go through what I went through as a child of a deadbeat musician. ...
