Planters have been placed around #bricklane as #modalfilters. @TowerHamletsNow claims that local shops asked for it. But having asked around- the response is the same: "we didn't ask for it. First we heard about it was a leaflet last week, informing of this plan". #StreetspaceLDN

This no consult plan is to last till November to allow for "social distancing" and al fresco dining... UNTIL NOVEMBER?!

Residential side streets have become drop off and U-turn points.
Traffic will have make its way around already congested Commercial St. & Whitechapel High St.

There is also the option to make it Permanent after the 10 week period.
Businesses and locals are directing their anger at contractors installing the planters, when those who should be on the receiving end of that anger are no where to be seen.

Locals have been gathering to question the decision and to raise doubts around the claims that locals wanted this, that more social distancing is needed and to point out that UK weather isn't really the kind anyone would want sit in while dining outdoors.

This is being implemented under emergency covid measures but locals are fuming that this unconsulted scheme will cause at least 10 weeks of strain on their mobility and accessibility- and of course cause additional congestion on surround streets, creating a noose of pollution.

It's also been noted that locals don't trust @TowerHamletsNow as they have seen and heard of how #TowerHamlets is fast becoming famous for sham consultations and imposing measures which contribute to social cleansing through gentrification.
Of course trendy cyclist are loving it.

#StreetspaceLDN staff have also been directed to the visible danger cyclists, travelling in both directions on a 1-way street (on a merged footpath and carriageway *no curbs) is causing. No curbs is also a danger to the blind & there is no enforcement against cyclists either.

@metpoliceuk @MetCycleCops will you be on hand to enforce the law, issue FPNs and even make arrests for cycling offences?

Been sent a tweet. As suspected, most likely a handful of shops NORTH of Hanbury street may hav been "the businesses who asked for it".
Apparently @BrickLaneBooks is very happy to see planters blockin the carriageway.

Why is @metpoliceuk so scared of taking on the cyclists? I'm sure they give one or two a good telling off but they won't openly criticise them they way they do everyone else.
I see cops just sitting in their cars while cyclist ride past breaking about 50 rules. Wth is going on?

#StreetspaceLDN would not disclose which business asked for it. But 1 business north of Hanbury street "Brick Lane books" took to twitter to applaud LBTH.
