A live tweet of Trump #RNC2020 speech and you had to guess Lee Greenwood would be walk up music... 1/x
Starting at 1025. Trump doing his best Alec Baldwin impersonation with key enunciating... 2/x
“Profoundly accept?” Odd. “New frontiers of ambition,” Odd. “Torch that enlightens the world?” Torches lighten the direct area around it; it’s not a beacon. 3/x
“Ap-pa-lation” of slavery? Hmm.. 4/x
Remember this “clear choice” rhetoric is not for the wavering independent, but to bring out even more the non-college white vote. #RNC2020 5/x
Redemption and punishment and sins. Here we go. And salvation. And... wait for it... God. Applause for God. “Joe Biden is not a savior... (but) a destroyer.” Like Gozer from Ghostbusters? Or worse? The destroyer from Revelation? 6/x
Note: Trump never promised to tell the truth, right? He promised not to be “politically correct,” which is *not* same thing as accuracy and honesty. So on keeping his promise or word... he is par for course for getting policies in place. 7/x politifact.com/truth-o-meter/…
“Modestly” and then claiming he is best since Lincoln. Trump doing the 47 year thing on Biden. Someone obviously leaked that line as talking point to Charlie Kirk 8/x
“Plaz...ma?” Was he trying to say Plaza as in the hotel? 9/x
BTW this is Trump’s worst teleprompter performance, worse than any of Trump’s state of union. He can’t/won’t ad lib and it is killing his cadence. 10/x
Trump has terrible physical movement and status at podium. His turn to right is just so bad... 11/x
This is really also a bad Biden attack. So many other people at #RNCConvention did it crisper and more succinctly. 12/x
I mean at this point everyone reading transcripts of this on South Lawn would be better teleprompter performance. 13/x
The boredom in the crowd is just so obvious from the cut away shots. It may be near midnight but this is not the “rally” they expected. We have had one ad lib worth mentioning that goosed the audience. 14/x
Ah yes “who is hiring the radical professors?” Um.. the state of Georgia, for me at least. 15/x
We are starting to repeat ourselves, aren’t we? This is just terrible. And he has totally protected the 2nd Amendment so much that the next guy can just erase it? Man, it’s late. 16/x
So on that college speech issue, it was so bad right? and not one school has been punished. And repeating more. Signal to end? 17/x
“No one like us on earth.” Wow. American exceptionalism on steroids. And now Manifest Destiny. And the greatest hits of US history. The tone on this is so wrong. It’s energy less. 18/x
So 70 mins or so. Def lost energy at end. And this illegal campaign use of government property has ended. Thank god. Please vote. For the other guy. /end

Let’s make a list of public/state schools with Gaza protests: 1/x
At the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, about 25 tents housed students calling for the university to divest from Israeli investments usatoday.com/story/news/nat…
And nine anti-war protesters at the University of Minnesota were arrested Tuesday morning after police took down an encampment apnews.com/article/columb…

@CaitlinPacific That the phrase “not what to think but how” has gotten to college tours shows how much conservative lies about higher education have changed it. What a shame Caitlin didn’t consider that. And on the subject of teaching in college…
@CaitlinPacific Teaching in college isn’t teaching debate. It’s not done to pair sides, know your own and strength/weakness of opposition. That is debate. And that a Georgia Board of Regents and Caitlin want more of that tells me…
@CaitlinPacific They don’t want professors to profess. We teach what we profess. We use dissoi logoi and Socratic method to do that. But we profess our POV/opinion/etc. In first year writing aka “how to argue” class I profess a specific …

Tenure gutted. Diversity deleted. Academic freedom under attack. In stark terms hundreds of Georgia #highered @BORUSG faculty describe the impact on research, students, and hiring in the Fall 2023 Georgia @AAUP newsletter. A thread. 1/x aaupgeorgia.org/newsletters
I’m having to watch my back and under
constant stress. This is not how I thought
the height of my academic career – I have
an international reputation in my discipline – would go.

I no longer feel that I can have frank
and open discussions on sensitive topics
with students. 2/x
I teach ethnic minority literature. I do
not feel safe teaching it these days.
I feel demoralized and unappreciated.

We had four failed endowment chair
searches this last year! 3/x

🧵 Much has been said about the Christian Nationalism of new House Speaker Mike Johnson. Charlie Kirk lays out in a concise tweet this ideology he shares with Johnson. Follow along to see the future 1/x

First thing to notice: Kirk and Johnson justify their political ideology with Christian scripture. Kirk uses the doctrine of depravity to justify constitutional “decentralization” of power. This is not same as “separation of power” though linked. Former is a nod to… 2/x
The hatred of federal government by conservatives. That doesn’t mean they hate power, only want it not merely in states but even church-based. Theocracy at local level. 3/x

Tomorrow Turning Point USA begins its third pastors summit. How deep is the organization into the Christian Nationalism and Seven Mountains Mandate that Charlie Kirk embraced in 2020? Let's look at the speakers and sponsors 1/x
First, one of the current leaders of the 7M movement, Ché Ahn, is a speaker. He's part of the New Apostolic Reformation group and spoke at a rally on the eve of the Capitol insurrection 2/x rightwingwatch.org/post/sarah-pal…
Next is Jurgen Matthesius, a 7M pastor at Awaken Church, which is built on the Hillsong foundation. Awaken has programs and plans that cover each of the “7 MountainS." 3/X h/t @Katerqburns leftcoastrightwatch.org/articles/preac…

An @aaup survey of faculty in 4 Southern states shows the wide impact on #HigherEd from political attacks & tenure gutting. This @chronicle story quotes a few individual responses. Here are some more striking voices from Georgia: #gapol 1/x chronicle.com/article/in-the…
"An overall climate of fear of retaliation and mistrust is the worst I've seen in over 20 years in academia."

"Actively looking for industry, non-profit, and consulting roles just in case it gets worse." 2/x
"Engaging less with programs on campus as there is high potential for them to be cut."

"I can no longer look my classes in the face and tell them that their college education will be a net-positive in their lives." 3/x
