This is a huge problem. People can't just up and leave Facebook sometimes. They have communities there, they have family there, they have organizing that will only be done there. Valid.

But if you wanna #DeleteFacebook & can't, there are other things you CAN do. Thread.
I'll start with my guide to ditching FB that lays out how you can be on it w/o feeding into/being beholden to the algorithm AND ALSO how you can access it on your phone w/o having the app. The title is about money but it's more than that.

In general, you can stay on FB without necessarily feeding into all the things that are wrong with FB. You can be on FB without giving/making them money. And you can be in groups organizing or be with family or close friends without giving all your data away.

Oh and: if, after reading this thread your first instinct is to fix your fingers to reply & tell me and everyone else how they need to leave Facebook, anyway, despite with how this thread started

OR

How there are x, y, z other web services that do one of the things FB does

OR
That people were able to organize or keep in touch with family and friends or read the news or whatever else before Facebook

And consider that, as a person who wrote two whole articles on this point, I might have already heard those arguments and considered those points.
I'm not new to the freaking Internet. I'm not new to social media. Your hot take you're so eager to tweet at me isn't hot, it's lukewarm at best, and has been considered and taken into account by the articles I linked, WHICH YOU WOULD KNOW IF YOU'D READ THEM instead of reacting.
The assumption that none of us has ever thought about these things is insulting and boring. You deleted Facebook long ago? Good for you! Now delete Twitter.

Just #DeleteFacebook! I did! It's not hard!

I will point out that this is a privileged stance. Just because YOU did it doesn't mean it's easy or viable for others to do so. Take your lack of empathy elsewhere

A thing I've been saying for a while, and a thing people continue to ignore when I do, is that WorldCon is designed to be for people who don't like progress, which is odd given that we're an SFFnal community.

The Hugo Award nominations and winners are not that, but the con?
I have been skeptical of & grumbly about WorldCon for over ten years. And I always warn BIPOC people away from it (and everyone else, too) and I always hear how This Time It's Better or Don't You See The Progress? And then a year like this one will come around & everyone is angry
But then we went thru some of the *exact* problems of this year in San Jose. And we've been through other versions of this problem in years past. I cannot remember what happened with the Hugo ceremony or presenters one year that was so bad, but I do remember that the next year >

Need to talk about something so I can get it out of my system and do the other stuff I have to do today. I want to discuss how white people think light-skinned-ness works in the Black community.
This was prompted by that blog post by Lela E. Buis on #AmericanDirt. I'm not gonna link it, it's not worth reading and she just wants clicks/attention. I will post the paragraph that summarizes everything wrong with this person's "contribution" to the conversation.

Taking a break from work to tell you about a portal fantasy I think should be nominated for a Hugo Award.

It's the story of a young Black man living in 1880s America. He's faced some hardships in his life, but he's skilled at riding a horse and liberating money from banks.
He and his buddy, a older white man, have just liberated said money from said banks and escaped the local marshal on *very* fast horses. They stop in a town the young man has been through before -- one where they don't take too kindly to the dark-skinned.
His partner, though his lens of privilege, thinks they'll be okay since "You're with me, now."

Guess what? It's not okay.

The locals chase them off with bullets. The young Black man escapes by diving into an old, abandoned mine... and is magically transported through time.
