Thoughts re: #DeleteFacebook

#DeleteFB to silence dissenting opinions

#DeleteFB to fight technocratic authoritarianism

are borne of competing ideologies but advocate for the same outcome.

The question is, which effect is deleting Facebook more likely to have?...
Deleting Facebook to silence dissent is somewhat redundant in its primary utility given FB already employs mechanisms to censor.

Then again, if the point of deleting is to take ownership of your information consumption (v. censoring others), that's a noble choice...
It's also likely that some intend a not-so-mass exodus to serve as a warning to Zuckerberg et al, i.e. "If you don't censor others MORE, I'm going to leave!"

& if he were smart, he would call their bluff, primarily because kowtowing to extortion only leads to more extortion...

🚨"We’ve created a persuasion machine that allows conservatives to reach, engage and move people to action like never before. Now is the time to expand and capitalize on this machine, setting the political playing field in advance of the 2022 election.”…
Titled “Reclaiming the Public Narrative,” the solicitation argues that the left, because of its clout within cultural institutions, has more access to centrist voters while the right is stuck “within its own echo chamber.”

It says the group will collect personal data gathered from petitions and other online tools to target voters using “language consumed by those in the persuadable middle.”

"Sim, acho que é o caso."

Justified anger across Australia now jumping continents. #DeleteFacebook first trended after Cambridge Analytica. Now a regular occurrence. I'm v curious to know how Facebook has gamed this out. It must have known this would happen. So...what's the play?…
Then again, this is the take from influential tech journalist, @CaseyNewton. If Facebook's press team took soundings from the journalists it likes and respects, maybe it missed the roiling anger that everyone else feels

🧵 Today’s issue of @platformer is a look at the battle inside Signal. The company is developing features that would make it vulnerable to abuse — and employees are sounding the alarm…
The WhatsApp privacy policy disaster has been a boon to the company. I’m told that it now has 40 million users, up from an estimated 20 million last month
But by adding features like group links, and working on features like usernames and crypto payments, employees tell me it’s gradually opening up avenues of abuse.

The amount of far-right lies @Facebook promotes is staggering and this fake news machine will explode in volume Tuesday night and onward. #DeleteFacebook
This is exactly the Trump media game plan. The avalanche of lies will explode Tuesday night. Be prepared to fact check your crazy relative when they drink the KoolAid by the gallon.
Are the National Guard being deployed to protect vote counting centers in swing states? Trump will send his mobs to intimidate vote counters. Unlike the Florida Preppy Riot in 2000, these won’t be tame GOP staffers. These will be armed mobs. No doubt arson will be attempted.

Good reason to dismantle it actually. Anything boycott-resistant needs a government intervention since the free market has been rendered moot.
You can’t boycott Facebook. User’s can’t. Advertiser’s can’t. That why it must be dismantled. Nothing should be able to withstand a boycott from both the B2B and B2C side. Nothing is more clearly a trust worth busting. That it manages our elections is only insult to injury.
Many people are saying, just #DeleteFacebook. It does nothing. It is hopeless. It is not the responsibility of individuals. It is the responsibility of a democratically elected government to break up a boycott-resistant company to achieve accountability.

#AdObservatory is an NYU project that enlists Facebook users to record the ads they see, building a database of the ads Facebook runs and to check whether Facebook is adhering to its own policies, for example, on labeling and limiting political ads

The project has been extensively used by journalists and transparency activists to hold Facebook to account for failing to live up to its own standards. It relies on a browser plugin that Facebook users choose to install to help with the transparency effort.

Facebook's dismal track record on advertising, combined with the urgent concerns about disinformation in paid political advertising in the runup to the 2020 election, are cause for alarm.

The company, however, sees it as cause for a legal threat.

I recently deleted my account after years of growing dissatisfaction. I did so knowing there are now people, businesses, and organizations I won’t have easy communication with. If you can’t #DeleteFacebook, this thread has good advice on dealing with it.
This is one of my biggest problems with the network. I HATE that one company has that much control, is the sole means of connection between many. So I removed myself, because I could. I know many who cannot, and I know what I’m already missing. Infuriating choice to have to make.
I’ve read more responses, from people who would be utterly isolated without FB, to activists who need it to organize, etc. It’s so heartbreaking that FB helps many this way but is utterly inhumane as a company. Helping is merely an unintended accident of its business model.

This is a huge problem. People can't just up and leave Facebook sometimes. They have communities there, they have family there, they have organizing that will only be done there. Valid.

But if you wanna #DeleteFacebook & can't, there are other things you CAN do. Thread.
I'll start with my guide to ditching FB that lays out how you can be on it w/o feeding into/being beholden to the algorithm AND ALSO how you can access it on your phone w/o having the app. The title is about money but it's more than that.

Part 2 will also help you stay in your organizing groups and not be on the news feed.

It appears that Zuckerberg worked the Trump admin over, stoking their fears about Tik Tok till Trump acted..
Zuckerberg is such a tool, but even he is smarter than Trump & Kushner

3-"Mr. Zuckerberg discussed TikTok specifically in meetings with several senators, according to people familiar with the meetings. In late October, Sen. Tom Cotton (R., Ark.) -- who met with Mr. Zuckerberg in September -- and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) wrote a letter to

Congress is trying to ram through reauthorization of the #PatriotAct and #FISA surveillance. These mass spying programs haven’t saved any lives, but they HAVE been used to crack down on protesters and political dissent.

Here’s a short history …

The first wiretaps were used to spy on a cop-turned-bootlegger in the 20’s. The public loved him for defying unjust Prohibition laws, and he never used violence against the public or the police. But the federal government wanted to make an example.

By the 30’s, the federal government was using wiretaps to spy on political activists, helping corporations prevent workers from unionizing in protest against unsafe working conditions and economic exploitation.

In addition, dozens of former employees signed a letter critiquing Zuckerberg's decision, saying it was a "betrayal" of Facebook’s early ideals.

Employees also questioned whether Facebook was in an “abusive relationship” with @realDonaldTrump.🔥

When our society needs protection from exploitation or aggression, we use our government to apply rules, regulations & order.

Our press used to be regulated to protect us against bias & false/misleading information, among other things. Powerful regulations were part of the Fairness Act, which was abolished in the 1980s. You've seen where that's brought us: our media is unreliable & untrustworthy.
Business regulations prevented corporations from becoming low-power and exploitative. Now, with too few regulations, we've lost healthy, wealthy capitalism to malignant capitalism that's looting our production & eating all of us alive. Kleptocracy, not capitalism. Looting.
