The Thiruvatruvay (Thiruvalla) copper plates of Chera king Sthanu Ravi (9th Century) details out the Annadhana given during Onam festival. Thiruvalla is a famous Vishnu shrine sung by Azhwars. This is one of the earliest references of the Onam festival celebrated in Kerala
The Vattezhuthu inscription goes like this

“In the 17th Regnal year of Sri Ko Sthanu Ravi...
the Thiruvatruvay Sabha and Adikalmar unanimously wrap up Avani Onam feast arrangements with the land donated by certain Punchappatakarathu Chenthan Sankaran”

A clear proof that the Onam festival is celebrated in Vishnu shrines. #HappyOnam (Pic Courtesy- VVS FB)
