1/3 My #museumbuddy@PoloDas & I are looking at how soldiers have been represented in the #UK & #India. In March 1918, Britain was short of 450K men! The shortfall was to be made up by Indian sepoys. Propaganda posters were produced and a major recruiting campaign began.
2/3 In northern India, there were few villages not visited by recruiting sergeants. It was the biggest push for sepoys of the war. @MuseumBuddy. In Britain the Government began to offer concessions to 'moderate' Indian voices in Congress in return for supporting recruitment.
Recruiting by the #Mumbai Presidency in 1918 was four times greater than the previous year and 88 times larger than pre-war levels! Propaganda posters were in demand! In that year greater levels of violence and coercion were used to enlist soldiers.
