NEW: A Census Bureau analysis has concluded the shortened #2020Census schedule increases the risk of "serious errors" in the results of the national head count, according to an internal bureau document obtained by House @OversightDems:

NEW: The Census Bureau is ending #2020Census door knocking in some parts of the U.S. even earlier than expected -- on Sept. 18 in San Diego area, possibly within next 2 weeks in Minneapolis area -- and that may further hurt public confidence in the count.

NEW: Last-minute changes to the #2020Census the Trump admin directed the Census Bureau to make not only end counting early, but also cut short critical processes to ensure an accurate count. One quality-checking effort has already been quietly scaled back.

2. After #2020Census counting is set to end on 9/30, the bureau has about 3 months to run quality checks on the info it's gathered. "If you want an accurate census, the quality checks are as important as the initial enumeration itself," fmr Census Bureau Dir. Ken Prewitt told me.
3. A growing number of former Census Bureau officials and other #2020Census advocates are raising the alarm that the shortened time for processing responses is likely to exacerbate undercounts of people of color, immigrants and other historically undercounted groups.

UPDATE: Starting today, 16.2M paper #2020Census forms are set to arrive in the mail at households that have not been counted yet in the more than 71,000 census tracts that had a self‑response rate of 65% or lower on July 28, the Census Bureau tells NPR.

2. Earlier this week, I confirmed that the Census Bureau -- under pressure from the Trump administration to deliver #2020Census results by the end of this year -- has set Oct. 7 as the cutoff date for receiving paper forms that are postmarked by Sept. 30.
3. "Based on historical experience & the very long self-response period in 2020, we expect very few mail returns that late in the process," the bureau said in an email Friday while noting that it hasn't experienced delays in receiving completed census forms this month or in July.
