I think a lot of folks are fumbling their attack on the Canada First messaging of the Conservatives.

Yes, it's clearly a racist nod to all the other ____ Firsts around the world, and a thin carbon copy of MAGA (cause MCGA isn't pronounceable) but!
It taps into something that is real and that the left has not been able to credibly offer: we need a Canadian industrial strategy that restores local supply chains. The pandemic and PPE laid that bare. So how do you talk about fostering Canadian industries while not being racist?
Unions have largely failed at this, with Canada-first messaging usually being accompanied with anti-Mexico sentiment (when related to NAFTA). And the Liberals' all-in on "progressive" trade agreements has made resisting this global race to the bottom important, though confusing
Yes, O'Toole is using xenophobia to boost his brand, but it isn't simply that, and pointing that out isn't going to satisfy the questions we need answered about Canadian industry.

We need local industries and good wages for a lot of reasons, but the most important is...
climate change. Global shipping needs to be intensely slowed and to do that, economies must develop locally to stop our reliance on shipping things so far around the world.

It requires a total rethink of the economy as it stands and the Left hasn't offered a compelling vision.
I'm going to write about some of this for @readpassage so stay tuned.

Here is a little thread on white women's fear. Nothing that hasn't been said before, but COVID has really made it clear just how much of white supremacy is maintained by white women's fear.

My Facebook feed has been a non-stop parade of white women's fear.
We talk a lot about how white women can weaponize our tears and cause injury and violence to racialized people, but more important is how white women seem to be afraid of .... everything .... and how social policy grows out of this constant and non-stop fear.
This fear drives policing. It drives the economy. It drives politics. White women's fears become society's collective fears and we divert from the real issues; the real fears that people should have.

With the government inexplicably outsourcing management of its student "volunteer" program, let's take a tour through some WE Charity contracts that they've already had from the feds.
May 1, 2019 - contract with the Privy Council of Canada for $24,996.00 to give workshop services. No competition for the contract (look: it magically happened to hit below $25K)

Jan. 22 2020 - they held an event for Global Affairs Canada. It cost $40K. Limited tender process again. open.canada.ca/en/search/cont…

THREAD: A friend of my partner's has fallen into the racist shitscape of internet conspiracies. He visited last summer and there was no hint of this, and is now convinced that BLM and the movement to defund police is a Chinese plot to have the UN invade the US.
I think it's important to share the theories because I keep seeing these tropes appear, both from hardcore racists (fuck them) but also from people who would say they mean well *but* .. they're supportive *but*

Identifying these conspiracies is really important to confront them.
So if you have people like this in your life, drop a comment and maybe we can see what kinds of logic helps to unstick them from time.

First off -- there is a lot of fear of Marxism. BLM = Marx = China = UN = NWO. You don't need to dig far to see this is anti-Semitic ...

Just starting work tonight on death in long-term and residential care and I wanted to start with a quick thread. There's a lot of blame to go around but I want to specifically focus on the mainstream media ...
As media has concentrated, there are way fewer eyes on these facilities. The reports, inquiries and news about the abuses within become little more than one-day affairs (s/o to @KateDubinski who, if I'm not wrong, covered the Wettlaufer inquiry intensely for CBC London)
Forget the fact that it's harder and harder for someone who, say, has two PSW parents to become a journalist and help influence coverage ... that's a big problem and doesn't only touch this crisis ... but what's been just as bad has been the total shutout of left-wing voices.

On February 13, 2020, Doug Ford struck an advisory panel into the staffing conditions of long-term care. Here is a thread about who he appointed to this panel.
When it was established, it was roundly criticized for not having a single representative of the workers who are in this system. There were some professors. But there were also owners/CEOs/EDs of LTC facilities. To start ...
One member was James Schlegel, owner of Schlegel homes. Collectively, there have been at least 63 deaths in their homes. Schlegel is also a big supporter of Doug Ford.

The pandemic is offering a masterclass in who society had deemed worthless.

It starts with older folks -- warehoused and unworthy of even dying with someone they love.

Then it's those who care for them -- PSWs, PABs, cleaners -- all who make so little money.
These folks keep others alive but have so few protections for themselves that once they start becoming sick, everything collapses.

Then there are migrant workers, some who are becoming sick right before the season. Paid less than minimum wage, it's maximum exploitation.
Then, low waged factory work. Aided by TFW labour, it ensures people get cheap meat, fast food, cheap products, cheap metals -- as folks make barely enough to live.
