The shallowness of the Government’s removal of the right of #UKinEU to return with EU families was laid bare in yesterday’s debate on the Immigration Bill.

A THREAD ➡️
The Minister stated that if the amendment British in Europe pushed for were passed “these family members would thereby continue indefinitely to bypass the Immigration Rules.”
So let’s get this straight: you are taking away rights from your citizens and when they want them back, you accuse them of trying to bypass the rules!
And when questioned about the discrimination that #UKinEU will face compared to #EUinUK, the Minister appeared to say that it would be unfair for UKinEU to have the same rights because they don’t live in the UK yet.
This does not end here - BiE will press for the amendment to be proposed again at Report stage.

In the meantime huge thanks to Lord Flight for proposing the amendment, to Lord Rosser for highlighting the discrimination against British citizens ...
... and to Lady Hamwee for, “ I simply ask the Minister what she would advise a couple, one British and one an EU national, who both have elderly parents. She is suggesting that they should pick between them for future care by the end of 2022. Is this really a humane approach?”

We are pleased to see the adoption of the EP resolution on the future relationship The text sends a clear message to the UK and EU MSs on the need to implement the citizens’ rights provisions of the Withdrawal Agreement in a timely and balanced manner. 1/5
Not doing so will call into question the credibility of both parties and their commitment to a future relationship based on their stated key priority of protecting citizens. 2/5
Not doing so also prolongs the uncertainty of over 1.2 million UK nationals living in the EU. Adding this to the uncertainty and upheaval already caused by COVID-19 this year is unfair and unacceptable. 3/5

Jane is now presenting at AFCO introducing British citizens in the EU... "Together with our friends, the3million living in the UK, we make up around 5 million of only 17 million EU citizens who fully use their right of free movement."
Jane tells her own story alongside her husband an ex-GDR citizen.
"Our lives are bound up with each other. You can’t just roll back the developments of the last 30 years and deny the integration that has come with free movement."

AFCO chairman @Antonio_Tajani confirms citizens' rights remain a top priority when welcoming the delegates. Presentations, followed by questions, followed by answers...
Dimitri is on...
@Antonio_Tajani Dimitri admits he is going to 'be harsh' - begins by talking about the history of settled status and the issues raised at the beginning with the EP and Home Office, just a few weeks after Windrush. The same issues are still there today - only android, only secondary legislation
@Antonio_Tajani He has completed over 350 applications, helping vulnerable people who have lived in the UK for decades. Many do not exist in the system. Stressful for elderly who cannot upload evidence accepted by the HO. Automatic checks often do not work. This is why so many get pre-settled.

The Exiting the EU Select Committee has started with EUinUK. UKinEU will follow afterwards. Watch live here:
parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/cc…
Clear evidence from the first panel about EUinUK reflecting many of the same issues as we face re reaching and then assisting vulnerable or hard to reach populations, such as accessibility, languages etc.
Funding is important. How to reach rural communities of EUinUK = how to reach rural UKinEU. We have had NO FUNDING from the UK or EU to help reach vulnerable or inaccessible populations (or anything else). Is this fair? There has been v limited funding made available for EUinUK.

While we welcome amplification of our issues, this actual situation is that there are contingency plans in place for the short term in key countries for a no deal scenario (but there are worrying holes). We are presenting evidence on this to the Exiting the EU committee on Weds.
However, if the UK won't pay their debts etc, we don't know if these plans will be revised. What is clear is that this uncertainty has already caused many pensioners to return to the UK if they can, while those who cannot for financial or physical reasons...
have spent 3 years living in fear as cliff-edge after cliff-edge arrives, always fearing the worst as there is very little information available and little effort has been made to reach them. This is no way for anyone to live and has caused much deterioration in health.

Commenting on the latest letter from Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, Stephen Barclay, to Michel Barnier regarding the ringfencing of citizens’ rights in the event of a no deal Brexit, Jane Golding, Co-Chair of British in Europe said:
‘At times our fight to protect our citizens' rights feels like one step forward and two steps back. However, today we are pleased to see that our recent meeting with Secretary of State for Exiting the EU Steve Barclay has resulted in a clearly worded letter to Michel Barnier ...
reflecting fairly and fully the issues we raised.

Mr Barclay is right that we are not asking for the withdrawal agreement to be re-opened. And a ringfenced withdrawal agreement is infinitely better than 28 unilateral national solutions that...
