Any fule kno "renewables aren't reliable"; "are expensive"; "are difficult to integrate into grids"

The problem is the fools never, EVER, bother to check the facts. So this thread is for all you fools out there, to save you 30 seconds googling.

Continued...
1. Reliability
University of Pennsylvania have done some good data digging: repository.upenn.edu/psr/vol1/iss8/…

They looked at SAIDI - average interruption duration ( minutes) of States in US and countries in EU.

Higher %ge renewable = longer SAIDI, right? WRONG.
Quite the opposite.
And the German switch to renewables the "Energiewand" must have led to an increased SAIDI, yes? NO.
2. More expensive.
"Electricity is more expensive in Germany than it is in the US. Germany has a higher percentage renewables. Ergo renewables are the reason."

Nope. You cannot compare EU to US because Natural Gas is consistently nearly twice as expensive in the EU
Instead....
You need to look at renewables %ge vs cost between different US states and then, on a different graph, repeat the exercise for EU countries.

Slight *reduction* in price with increasing %ge renewables. (very weak correlation though: wide scatter)
A variation on the theme of Electricity in the EU is more expensive is: "Denmark has the highest percentage wind energy in the EU and the highest Electricity prices"
Nope: it's all down to taxation - which goes into the general pot in Denmark NOT renewables subsidies.
3. Grid Integration.
There are 3 elements to this myth (grains of truth actually, but ancient grains):
a) Power not where you want it. An HVDC supergrid from Iceland to Egypt would virtually eliminate this issue.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuperSmar…

supergrid-institute.com/en/2020/02/05/…
b) Power not when you want it. Typically the daytime maximum demand is 50% more that the night-time minimum. Wind Turbine output doesn't necessarily match this. However, the switch from ICE cars to EV's offers the opportunity to shift the demand curve with night-time charging.
And the switch from gas-fired boilers to electrical heat pumps creates a huge, low-cost, buffer for load shifting: run the heat-pumps at night and store the heat for the next day.

c) Grid resilience / frequency nadir
This can occur with a lot of wind turbines running and a sudden failure in part of the grid.
Professor Zhang at Birmingham University has just published a really clever solution that turns turbines into a strength rather than a weakness in this situation.

And so, twitter fules, please don't "@" me with opinions. Unless you have a link to some actual data, or a proper study by a respected university, or institute, just save your opinions for the other fools down the pub.

Does anyone else feel a bit disappointed that the ISC report mentioned "9 Russians" but did not name them?

Actually you can find out quite a lot with a bit of googling...
This might not be "the 9", but I bet there is some crossover....

@rebechilliard Goods need to be certified as conforming to EU standards before being placed on the EU market.

The producer has to prove things to the notified authority.

For companies based in the EU a whole lot of things don't need a whole audit trail of proof; just being based in the EU...
@rebechilliard ..is enough to prove you haven't used any dodgy materials/ methods/suppliers, because the EU knows such things are not available to companies in the EU.

Manufacturers in 3rd Countries can also sell in the EU, but they have to assemble a ton of ...
@rebechilliard ...paperwork and independent conformity certification. Far more than is needed by an EU company to get their goods certified.

Many (most) UK companies who have been happily selling in the EU and getting their products certified fairly easily....

@colinrtalbot The Ulster protestants were also the backbone of the American revolutionary army in 1776. King George described the American Revolution as "a Presbyterian war".

The simple truth is Scots Irish culture descends from the Border Reivers of the 13-16th Century "debatable lands"
cont
@colinrtalbot … and is entirely different from both the Gaelic Highlander Culture and the East Coast Anglo-Norman culture.

Its watchwords are "might is right" and "no surrender". Peace is anathema to them - you do not come to an accommodation with your enemies...
@colinrtalbot ...you exterminate them as Andrew Jackson did the native Americans - the croppies must lie down.

To achieve their ends, they will reach for any tool that comes to hand: the ballot box (ballot-stuffing) or the rifle; the law - if it is on their side - or the lynch-rope.

I believe HMG are DELIBERATELY creating a situation in Belfast and Larne where the border controls in January will not meet EU requirements for handling 3rd country imports.

I believe they are planning to manufacture a crisis. Put the EC in the ...
… position of having to either turn a blind eye to a hole in the SM perimeter, or force IE to take the blame for NI/IE border checks.

HMG's plan consists of deliberately NOT building the necessary infrastructure, staff levels and systems at Belfast and Larne and also...
… frustrating the EU's ability to monitor the provision of GB/NI border controls by banning them from even renting office space in Belfast.

HMG cannot, however, prevent Dublin from putting the correct infrastructure in place by January.

I would suggest that NI businesses ...

Just to summarise:
1. Johnson pretended the tracing question was about testing, not tracing.
2. He explicitly admitted physicians had discharged C19 carriers to care homes / implicitly confirmed this was GOV advice up to 15th April (!!!) / egregiously tried to scapegoat Doctors.
3. Fashioned one rod for Hancock's back: 200K tests per day in May.
4. Fashioned another just for giggles: tracing system up and running by June.
5. Sent out the message: "We couldn't care less about foreign NHS staff who are giving their lives to save ours."
6. Got his "£900M" wrong by a factor of 10.

All the while stammering, gabbling; chuntering about Starmer's "negativity" (34 dead will do that); cokeheadlike asides on "forensic"; flashes of palpable evil.

And Dan says "Boris gave Starmer a pasting".
Wha? Dan, I WATCHED IT LIVE.

These clowns really need to get better at their rebuttals...

Claim: The Army had to be called in to sort out your shit-show.
Rebuttal: "The army was utilised"... word salad...word salad..

Guys? GUYS! That's actually a confirmation not a rebuttal.
Claim: You stored PPE in a smoke-damaged, asbestos-laden warehouse.

Rebuttal: Yes we did. But (as luck would have it) tests showed no contamination (honest, cross our hearts).

So you were as reckless as fck, but got lucky. May as well drive the wrong way down the M1 then...
Claim: Some pallets were blocking aisles, potentially hampering access and delivery.

Rebuttal: It was only a few...

It only *takes* "a few" to block an aisle, FFS. It only took one sperm to create whomever drafted this rebuttal - but that was one too many.
