19 years ago today, if you had told me that this cynical grifter would be president and Rudy Giuliani would be working on behalf of a Russian intelligence officer - I wouldn't have believed you.
here's the Giuliani story if you missed it

We have absolutely no idea what the world would look like in another 19 years, so don't take anything for granted

You Who Wronged
BY CZESLAW MILOSZ

You who wronged a simple man
Bursting into laughter at the crime,
And kept a pack of fools around you
To mix good and evil, to blur the line,
Though everyone bowed down before you,
Saying virtue and wisdom lit your way,
Striking gold medals in your honor,
Glad to have survived another day,

Do not feel safe. The poet remembers.
You can kill one, but another is born.
The words are written down, the deed, the date.
And you’d have done better with a winter dawn,
A rope, and a branch bowed beneath your weight.

Washington, D.C., 1950

So here we are, at the end of the Polish presidential election campaign. What themes has the ruling party chosen to debate, at this moment of international crisis? Here is one: Trzaskowski, the opposition leader, will "fulfill Jewish demands."
here is another: Gay rights are an "ideology worse than communism"

also: no vaccines should be mandatory

Exit polls for the first round of the Polish elections are in. The incumbent (just back from the White House) has 41.8%.58% voted for opposition. In the second round he faces Rafał Trzaskowski, mayor of Warsaw. Any outcome still possible.
In any case, Trump's blessing turned out not to be a knock out punch
For those who don't follow regularly: the current president, Andrzej Duda, is famous for having helped break the constitution and pack the courts. The challenger, Traszkowski, is calling for a return to rule of law.

why didn't he say so earlier, when it was actually possible to impeach the president?
a wide variety of options were open to Bolton. He could have spoken to Robert Mueller. He could have given evidence in the House. He could have convened Republican Senators - they would have listened to him - to tell them how dangerous the president is.
Instead he stayed silent. Some combination of cowardice arrogance, belief in his own need to maintain influence and greed - he thought he could sell this book - prevented him from behaving with patriotism or honor.

In the past 24 hours, several senior American generals have spoken out to remind Americans that they serve the constitution, not the president. Where are the senior Republicans? Why don't they offer a similar message? Here is my explanation:

my article criticized James Mattis, former Secretary of Defense, for not speaking out. But now he has:

Where is Lindsey Graham? As an ex-military lawyer, he has some of the closest ties of any US politician not just to the military, but to rule-of-law issues in the military.

Trump declaring he will block immigration in order to fight the "invisible enemy" is yet another attempt to deflect attention from the total chaos created by his administration. Immigrants are not responsible for the federal government's failure to produce tests and PPE.
Immigrants are not responsible for the lack of competent people in the cabinet, or the authoritarian loyalty culture surrounding Trump - which delayed reaction to the virus - or for the president's inconsistent messaging, which confuses people and weakens our national response.
This is a very old, very familiar, dictator's tactic: If you can't solve a real problem, then create a fake problem and declare you have solved that one instead.
