This is an extremely precarious time for our community, & we find ourselves at a cross-roads of sorts in our efforts to contain COVID19. The virus doesn’t care about all the good work we’ve done together over the last 6 months. All of that can be undone in a matter of days. (1/9)
Whether that happens is entirely up to us. A majority of people are following the rules, protecting themselves, and being considerate of others. That said, a majority simply isn’t good enough. Not during a pandemic, & especially not when we consider what’s at stake. (2/9)
We need more of us to do better. That includes a handful of students and young people, yes, but it also includes a handful of businesses, and other individuals. This is on all of us. (3/9)
As a City, we remain focused on education, but part of that education includes making sure people are fully aware of the financial penalties for not masking up, and for not respecting provincial orders when it comes to crowd sizes, indoors or outdoors, etc.. (4/9)
These fines are steep, and they apply to everybody. I would hope our collective health and well-being -- friends, family and strangers alike -- would provide ample motivation to do the right thing, and follow public health guidelines. (5/9)
But if not, aside from fines, consider this as well: the bars, restaurants, and other establishments we’re currently able to enjoy simply won’t be available for *anyone* to enjoy if we continue heading down this path. The Premier said as much today during his remarks. (6/9)
Whether that happens is something we as a community – and we as a province – must decide. If we carry on the path we’re on now, we will have no choice. The toll on our healthcare system, and on human health is simply too great. (7/9)
In spite of what we’ve seen over the last few days, I am hopeful that we will make a different choice. That we will remain vigilant as ever, we will act safely and responsibly, and London will remain an example to other communities when it comes to our COVID-19 response. (8/9)
Let’s get back to what we’ve been doing over the last several months. If we don’t, the sacrifices we’re being asked to make today are nothing compared to those we’ll be forced to make in the not too distant future. (9/9)

🧵Thank you to colleagues and members of the public for last night’s respectful debate at SPPC resulting in the approval of locations for the first three hubs as part of our Whole of Community System Response to Health & Homelessness. However, I’d like to expand on a few things…
RE: The site proposed for 705 Fanshawe Park Road West. I’m speaking as Mayor, but also as a longtime resident of Ward 7. I live in the area with my four kids. My mother lives even closer. To those who have concerns, we're neighbours. I live there too.
I've known people in NW London to be kind & hardworking. Many of us have managed to carve out decent lives for ourselves. Driving around the area, you see lots of people who have done reasonably well. The least we can do is support those who haven’t had the same opportunities.

Since the evening of June 6th, I have struggled to find the right words to express, on behalf of our city, the magnitude of what happened to the Afzaal family, #OurLondonFamily. #ldnont
One year later, I remain at a loss on how to properly communicate the depths of our anger, our sadness, and terror.

Make no mistake, words do matter. They can provide comfort, encouragement, and hope.
Ultimately, however, words are nowhere near as important, nor as impactful, as action — especially one year later.

London is fortunate to have a proud, and vibrant Chinese community in our city. The outpouring of support we’ve seen in response, from Londoners of all backgrounds, is a testament to that. And, I believe, a far better reflection of the values this city truly represents. #ldnont
We have been in contact with LPS and the Downtown BIA to discuss the content of the sign and although the numerous messages are divisive and offensive to members of the community, they do not meet any threshold for criminal charges to be issued. #ldnont
There’ve also been allegations of members of the Asian community being refused service. The issue of the sign content (which has been changed at least three times) as well as the refusal of service allegation is actively being reviewed by LPS along with regulatory agencies.

Today is an exceptionally difficult day for many in #LdnOnt, and across Ontario. I know so many individuals, and so many businesses have made so many sacrifices, and yet, here we are, about to enter a second Ontario-wide lockdown.
There is no real positive spin one can attempt under these circumstances. As I've said before, individuals and businesses who are not responsible for mass spread of the virus are bearing the brunt of consequences for those who are. #ldnont
That said, I have great respect, appreciation, and empathy for Premier Ford's position. It's an impossible one. We all see the numbers, both locally and provincially, and everybody can acknowledge they're going the wrong way. #ldnont
