We are horrified by reports that Irwin County Detention Center in GA has been performing nonconsensual mass hysterectomies on detained people in @ICEGov custody.
Coercive sterilization is a human rights violation and perpetrators of these abuses must be held accountable!
The US has a long history of coercive sterilization. Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities and people with disabilities continue to be harmed by these human rights violations, including in detention settings.
Intersecting forms of oppression, including discrimination on the basis of immigration status, race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, and primary language make migrants and people seeking asylum more vulnerable to human rights violations.
We KNOW that #reproductiverights violations against migrants, immigrants, and asylum seekers are not limited to this report.
In 2017, @ProjectSouth reported that the same detention center in GA failed to provide prenatal care to pregnant immigrants in their custody: bit.ly/3hvcs6N
Advocates have documented a pattern of egregious abuses targeting pregnant people and women of reproductive age in ICE detention facilities. This has only worsened during #COVID19: bit.ly/35uRfHv
We MUST ensure that all migrants and people seeking asylum are protected from human rights abuses at the hands of the U.S. government.

The death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg marks the passing of a legal giant who devoted her life to advancing the liberty and equality of women, first as a litigator and later as an appellate judge and then a Supreme Court Justice.
Her clear, unwavering conviction that women must be treated as equal citizens under the law changed the legal status of half of the nation.
As an attorney, she was a trailblazer and won major victories before the Supreme Court, outlawing sex discrimination in the 1970s.

BREAKING: We just filed an emergency motion with the U.S. Supreme Court asking them to restore essential, time-sensitive medication abortion services in Texas while our case challenging @GovAbbott's #COVID19 order proceeds. #AbortionIsEssential
2. For nearly three weeks, providers in Texas have had to cancel appointments for hundreds of patients, and today, abortion remains virtually inaccessible in the state due to @GovAbbott's #COVID19 order.
3. Meanwhile, leading medical experts, including the @AmerMedicalAssn, @acog, and @boardobgyn have told the courts that abortion care should not be delayed during #COVID19 & that doing so creates a greater strain on the hospital system during this global public health crisis.

1. Tomorrow, our President and CEO, Nancy Northup will take the stand and testify before Congress in support of the Women's Health Protection Act.

So, what is the Women's Health Protection Act, and why do we need it? #ActForWomen THREAD:

2. In 2016, the U.S. Supreme Court reaffirmed the right to access abortion care without undue burden. Yet anti-abortion lawmakers have escalated their attacks, pushing through over 170 harmful laws since then, and nearly 450 since 2011.
3. These laws:
• Obstruct abortion access
• Lower quality of care
• Shame patients
• Require providers to perform medically unnecessary procedures and lie to patients
• Increase costs and risks of #repro health care
• Create gross inequities in access to health care.

Just two candidates left... now taking the stage at #OurRightsOurCourts, @ewarren!!

Tune in NOW: facebook.com/reproductiveri…
@ewarren .@ewarren says courts are moving in the direction of protecting a "corporate minority" instead of individual rights.

"They have become a core part of tilting our country and our laws in a direction ... that helps those at the top and undercuts everyone else. #OurRightsOurCourts
@ewarren "We need a court system that is independent of our political system." - @ewarren #OurRightsOurCourts

This is especially important to the work that we do at the Center. If courts do not adhere to the rule of law, it hinders our ability to protect and expand #reprorights.

#MothersDay THREAD:
Today, we are reminded of the women who remain unjustly imprisoned in El Salvador's prisons for suffering obstetric emergencies, and we celebrate the women that we, along w/our partners, @AgrupCiudadana, have freed. These are their stories:
1. Teodora del Carmen Vasquez was attacked while she was pregnant and fell on her stomach during the incident, causing her to suffer through a stillbirth. She was sentenced to 30 years in prison for aggravated homicide, forcing her to leave her 3-year-old son behind.
2. Ena Vinda Munguia lost consciousness after giving birth and awoke in a hospital, where she was interrogated by police & prohibited from seeing her baby. Even though there was no proof that she attempted an abortion. Ena was unjustly sentenced to 15 years in prison.

THREAD:
With all the lies being used in tonight's #SOTU to twist NY and VA’s legislation to protect abortion, it’s important to know what these laws actually do.
The NY law simply removes abortion from the criminal code, solidifies Roe v. Wade in state law, and allows patients who need abortion after 24 weeks to get care in their home state rather than travel across the country. #SOTU
The VA law would end the 24-hour waiting period for abortion patients, remove the state-mandated ultrasound, and require one doctor—instead of three—to approve a request for a third-trimester abortion. #SOTU
