#BREAKING: I’m meeting with @USPS Postmaster General Dejoy and other Secretaries of State right now to discuss the crucial role that USPS is set to play in protecting our democracy during a pandemic. As the conversation unfolds, I will be sharing what I learn here.
In opening remarks, Dejoy admitted he should have given Secretaries of State more notice re the postcard sent to all households and PO Boxes. After breaking original promise to keep us in the loop, USPS official says he thinks USPS can commit to giving a heads up in future.
Given the sheer amount of misinformation and lies about mail ballots coming from this administration, I just asked PostMaster Dejoy three questions:
Question 1: What is your plan to specifically address the misinformation coming from this administration?
Question 2: What is your plan to increase confidence in USPS’ ability to safely and securely deliver ballots on time.
Question 3: How will you use your position as Postmaster General to protect our democracy from forces that are actively trying to undermine confidence in the election?
BREAKING: The @USPS Postmaster General Dejoy said he disagrees with the president on Vote by Mail.
I asked @USPS Postmaster General Dejoy if he agrees with Attorney General's unsubstantiated belief that it would be easy to bribe postal workers for ballots.
Specifically Postmaster General, do you agree with Attorney General Barr and if so, what are you doing specifically to protect mail carriers and protect our democracy?
#BREAKING: When I asked Dejoy whether he agreed with me that postal workers will be able to carry out the election and any allegation about bribery was intended to undermine the election, he said he agreed. But he didn’t condemn Barr’s ridiculous assertions. I do.
The Colorado election model leads the nation in turnout and security, due in large part to our #VoteByMailforAll system. Reality Check: We are in a pandemic. Every American deserves the right to vote safely and securely like Coloradans.

39 days out from the most important election in my lifetime and yesterday, the President of the United States refused to commit to a “peaceful transfer of power.” As Colorado’s chief election official, let me set the record straight. (thread)
.@realdonaldtrump will not circumvent the law in Colorado. Under Colorado law, the presidential candidate that receives the most votes WILL receive our electoral votes. Colorado has enforced this law in the past and will enforce it again.
Just a few months ago, the Supreme Court unanimously agreed with CO that a state can remove presidential electors who ignore state law & the vote of the people. CO took our case to the Supreme Court to stop bribery and political chaos from ensuing. That’s called planning ahead.

AG Barr tried to gaslight America yesterday. His job is to #defenddemocracy, not work to undermine it. Barr is reading from the same voter suppression playbook as @realDonaldTrump. Every word of his statements on #VoteByMail could undermine confidence in the election. (Thread)
Fact: Millions of Americans have voted privately and securely from the safety of their homes for generations. We have been voting by mail as early as the American Revolution. #VoteByMail works for our military men and women and it works for @realDonaldTrump and his family.
Another fact: After a five-year investigation, the DOJ found “scant” evidence of voter fraud. Perhaps AG Barr should check his own agency’s receipts before lying about vote-by-mail and voter fraud.

I just found out the @USPS is sending this postcard to every household and PO Box in the nation. For states like Colorado where we send ballots to all voters, the information is not just confusing, it’s WRONG. (Thread)
Here in Colorado (and also in CA, DC, HI, NJ, NV, OR, UT, WA, & VT) voters don’t request ballots because a ballot is mailed to every registered voter. But the @USPS is confusing our voters by telling them to request a ballot.
Secretaries of State asked @USPS Postmaster General DeJoy to review a draft before election information was sent to voters to ensure accuracy. But he refused. Now millions of postcards with misinformation are printed & being mailed to voters.

Our great AG @pweiser is arguing on behalf of the Dept. of State before the Supreme Court right now. It’s my firm belief that unelected, unaccountable presidential electors shouldn't be allowed to decide the prez election without regard to Colorado voters' choices and state law.
This case, if not decided correctly, can throw our elections into chaos. The idea that bribed electors could still cast their ballot would undermine confidence in our elections and voters' participation in 2020.
Imagine that the entire presidential campaign process is just advisory, and all of our votes are just advisory. We can't let this happen, and I hope SCOTUS decides in CO's favor and protects our elections and Americans' right to vote.

Listening to the SCOTUS sister-case to Dept. of State v Baca. The Court has had a line of questions about how these cases, if decided in favor of the electors, could throw the county in chaos at the presidential election. #copolitics
Washington, in Chiafalo v. WA, argues that once the people have the right to vote directly in the presidential election, that right cannot be taken away by rogue electors. I agree -- we cannot allow electors to disenfranchise Coloradans!
@AGOWA: “Once the legislature has given the right to vote, the public has the right to vote…A legislature can’t override that afterwards" by having electors undermine the people's votes.
