[Thread] What does backing a manager mean?

Is it giving him exorbitant amounts of money? Is it giving him his targets? Who was backed more, one who spent 200m or one who spent 60m or one who got his targets?

Money spent equates to backing? That's a false perception. #MUFC
Guardiola at City:

1st year: $236.50m - 10 players
2nd year: $349.25m - 10 players
3rd year: $86.45m - 3 players
4th year: $183.50m - 4 players

4 years: $855.8m - 27 players.
Klopp at Pool:

1st year: $87.89m - 6 players
2nd year: $191.27m - 6 players
3rd year: $200.42m - 4 players
4th year: $11.44m - 4 players

4 years: 491.2m - 20 players
Bielsa at Leeds:

1st year: $12.54m - 10 players
2nd year: $0m - 9 players

2 years: 12.54m - 19 players
I picked those 3 managers because they are regarded as the greatest coaches in the game. I used the word "coaches" for a reason.

Not all their signings have worked out and between the 3 of them only 5 players were promoted from their club's youth academy. #MUFC
Compare that to being drip-fed signings at United. The amount of money is irrelevant if the quantity and the quality are not there. I'd rather United spend 30m on 6 signings that fit the manager than 100m on one player that fit the manager. #MUFC
Backing the manager means getting him minimum 60% of his 1st targets each season. They say Ole spent 214m so far so he's been backed. That's false. In 3 windows Ole got 4 signings and a loan. All 3 managers above got double in 1 window. #MUFC
What this means is that all 3 have been fully backed but not only that, they are allowed a greater room for error on transfers without it effecting the direction of the rebuild. On the other hand, Ole has to get EVERY single signing right or else United are f***ed. #MUFC
Lastly, all 3 managers mentioned are ones I follow & learn from but they chose to buy an entire 1st XI (almost) than coaching already existing players. Why is Ole not allowed the same?

I picked them also b\c of the difference in the money spent. #mufc
Low, Mid, and High but the constant is the high number of incomings. They needed many players at first to quickly implement their style then more to cement it & perfect it.

Don't look at money spent, look at the quality & quantity & if they were the actual targets.

End. #MUFC

The fact that the club, the media and ‘some’ fans still lay the blame of Man Utd’s woes at the feet of their CBs is quite frankly catastrophic. Man Utd are weakest defensively on the transitions. The issues are what’s behind the CBs and what’s in-front of the CBs. 1/1
If these 2 areas are weak, put any CB & they’ll look bad. Man Utd literally have players that don’t like showing for the ball. When they do, they do it too late or commit a mistake after it. This is actually the insane part. Showing for the ball is most basic thing to do… 2/2
…as a footballer. Utd keep buying defenders but the issues still remain. Why do you think that is?

Its like wondering why the centre part of a bridge fell when the edges were cut off. 3/3

Just a few things to highlight on Man Utd's last game.

In the first ~20mins United remained solid in their defensive shape. It's normal to employ a 442 out of possession, if one of your forwards doesn't work off the ball. Guardiola did that with D.Silva when his legs were gone.
The reason being it effectively reduces the space the "non presser" has to cover. The reason United were solid at first is because they were passive in pressing (i.e. Bruno & Ronaldo). They were only interested in blocking the Leicester's pivots.
Sancho was tucked in as a mid as United did care if Amartey had the ball a lot.

The problem started when Bruno decided to press and Ronaldo didn't join him and even when he did he did it so bad that all the lanes were opened. Pogba and Matic not joining the press meant..

“If you see the table you would think United is in a crisis.”

Ole’s issue right now isn’t the results per say, although that might change quickly, its the performances. They ranged from terrible to okay to between okay & good. Never controlled or great (only Leeds).
Results will follow performances if performances don’t improve. Can they improve? Yes. Can they not? Also, yes. The deeper you go into the season without them improving the less likely they’re to improve. After the intl., there should be an immediate response or it’ll get ugly.
United look like an all star team that doesn’t play as a team. The midfield imbalance heightens the issues but it’s not the root cause. The root cause is lack of compactness and team work off the ball, which in turn makes the structure weak and all over the place.

Solskjær relies a lot on the forward players having ‘chemistry’, ‘zip’, or ‘magic’ through their quality, which is fine since you have more quality than most teams. Now, you need to provide them a solid stable foundation. Defensive transitions need to be significantly improved.
In terms of personnel, keeping Matic fresh, McFred injury free will be extremely vital. The only 2 pivot combinations that provide, somewhat, stability to the core are the McFred and the Pogtić. On paper, PogFred should be a good combination but on the pitch it definitely isn’t.
Fred’s erratic-ness, early tackle diving, & lack of physicality makes him a liability next to Pogba, who is not really mobile to cover. So, to achieve cohesiveness, I’d only rotate between the McFred or Pogtić combinations. And yes, I know Pogba’s value higher up but oh well…💁‍♂️

How Solskjær was one step ahead of Guardiola for 90mins!

Man City 0 v 2 Man Utd — Tactics #MUFC
From the off, #mufc showed aggressive intent. What was interesting was how compact & narrow Utd made the pitch vertically in their 4231 OOP. The dist. b/w CBs & forward 3 was maintained for large parts of the 90. This suffocated #mci centrally & denied Gundogan & KDB space.
#MUFC made sure they denied central overload through dropping a CB with #MCI's ST to prevent him space to receive and run at the defense. This was instantly shown when Maguire followed Jesus deep, giving him no space to turn. Lindelof shifted the line to cover Maguire.

Highlighting a couple of improvements from United's Europa league R32 win over La Real. #MUFC

La Real 0 v 4 Man Utd — Buildup & Pressing. #RSOMUN
Pressing & traps:

Often #mufc are hasty & over-commit in their pressing, especially from players like Rashford and Bruno. Thus leading their press to be dis-jointed and by-passed easily. On Thursday, they nailed it. They formed a pressing cage around #RSO entire midfield.
Aim was to minimize #RSO creative players' involvement on the ball. In fact, Merino & Silva had the fewest touches of their teammates. Bruno & MG11 focused on cutting passing lanes to midfield instead of rushing the press. MG11 pressed nearside CB when ball went out-wide.
