The U.S. Republicans have become an “increasingly authoritarian white nationalist party.” This matters to Canada, & Alberta in particular, because the CPC & the UCP have close ties to the Republicans and are copying their playbook. #AbLeg #abpoli #cdnpoli vox.com/policy-and-pol…
Just a reminder, this is the UCP’s current Agriculture Minister, who continues to be a big fan of Trump’s authoritarian approach to politics. He’s just one of many UCPers (including Kenney himself) who made regular trips to the US for tips & advice from the “mothership.” #abpoli
Here’s an article I wrote about the Republican-style authoritarian tactics and policies beginning embraced by Canadian conservatives (especially Kenney’s UCP in Alberta). Of course, Stephen Harper has been heavily involved in creating “GOP North.” thetyee.ca/Opinion/2020/0…
I also wrote about how the UCP is following the Republican playbook on labour laws. They want to continue the redistribution of wealth upward to their rich cronies — mimicking what what Republicans in the States have been doing for decades.

With her decision to strip teachers of their fundamental democratic rights, Danielle Smith has awakened a sleeping giant. Alberta unions are now united in one purpose: topple the UCP. Organizing a towards a general strike will be part of our strategy to make it happen. Image

“This government wants to take that power — the power of collective action — away from workers. We are going to find ways to take that power back.”

In an emergency meeting tonight, the leaders of almost all of Alberta’s public and private unions unanimously agreed to send a message to Premier Danielle Smith, warning her not to use the Notwithstanding Clause against striking teachers. See full text of the statement below 💥👇
Dear Premier Smith,
On behalf of the more than 350,000 working Albertans who we represent, we urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to rule out the use of the Notwithstanding Clause as part of your government’s approach to the teachers’ strike.
Invoking the clause would be unprecedented in the history of Canadian labour relations. It would also escalate the situation from a confrontation between your government and the teachers to a confrontation between you and the entire Canadian labour movement.

Can we please parse in detail some of the BS that our Premier puts forward as facts. Exhibit #1: “
“The guidance that Health Canada gives is that everybody get (flu shots) because influenza can impact negatively both the very young and the very old.” edmonton.citynews.ca/2025/08/23/pre…
The implication here is that Health Canada has NOT given guidance suggesting that everybody get the Covid shot. But, that’s not true! Health Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization has CLEARLY recommended that EVERYONE should get Covid boosters.

Today, our Premier played the victim card and suggested that the federal government’s “attacks on our oil and gas industry” make consideration of separation from the rest of Canada justifiable. The problem is there is ZERO evidence that our energy sector is hurting. (THREAD) Image
Smith is gaslighting Albertans in an effort to manipulate them into voting for separation. She’s doing this by spinning a web of lies, half truths and innuendo. The truth is we’ve never produced more oil — up by over a million barrels per day since 2014. Some “lost decade”! Image
And oil and gas profits are up 996% since 2019 (yes, you read that right). These are record profits in the most profitable industry in the country. This is NOT an industry that is being hard-done by the federal government. Don’t buy Smith’s sob story! Image

I’ve been thinking a lot about JD Vance’s speech in Munich. It’s outrageous, yes. But it’s also important because it’s basically the MAGA crowd telling on themselves. Their strategy involves pulling out all the stops (misinformation, voter suppression etc) …
… to win one election, then using that democratic mandate to basically make sure that there’s never a truly democratic election ever again. The fact that Europe has figured this out has the Trump/Putin crowd freaked out. So, by scolding the Europeans for cracking down on …
…Musk and foreign-funded election interference, Vance is actually telling the Europeans (and us, here in Canada) exactly what we need to do to defeat the MAGA/Putin axis from taking over our democracies.

Goodbye Alberta Advantage! A report released today shows that average wages in Alberta fell behind Quebec in 2024 after falling behind BC in 2023. This represents a shocking decline in Alberta wages, which used to be 17% higher than the Canadian average. #abpoli #abecon #ableg Image
The report, prepared by economist @JimboStanford in cooperation with the @ABFedLabour, shows that Alberta has had the slowest wage growth in Canada since 2019. afl.org/press-release-…
@JimboStanford @ABFedLabour “Once a promising place for workers to find jobs, earn decent wages, and support their families, Alberta has more recently demonstrated among the weakest labour markets in Canada,” reads the report.
