THREAD: Nawaletea sights and sounds kutoka Nyamongo as received
Videos coming in from the scene in #Tanzania Nyamongo when today police teargassed citizens waiting to greet opposition candidate @TunduALissu who was passing on the way to Serengeti
This is how it started
Once the police had fired tear gas, @TunduALissu ‘s convoy continued through! Look at Lissu’s compassion as he is helping citizens wash their eyes with water to clear it from the gas! What leadership! Citizens are covering their faces to avoid inhaling tear gas #Tanzania
Then @TunduALissu got out of his vehicle and explained to the police that they have no right to tear gas/shoot people, any complaint should be taken to the Electoral Commission! He stated he’ll talk to people in Nyamongo, #Tanzania they might as well shoot him if they choose to!
People and the convoy walked defiantly through the heavy cloud of tear gas in Nyamongo #Tanzania to get a chance to hear opposition candidate @TunduALissu speak a few words before continuing with his campaign journey
After the gas dispersed @TunduALissu stopped in the middle of the road to greet the people of Nyamongo #Tanzania
FYI: Just to get some background this is a mining district with North Mara Gold Mine that was owned and operated by Barrick and there was a massacre in 2011
This woman passionately explains that in Nyamongo #Tanzania they are continuously experiencing jailing by the police and suffer injustice, she stated unequivocally she will never support CCM (ruling party) and will vote for @ChademaTz
This woman speaking passionately is overcome by emotion as she expresses her outrage about the injustice in Nyamongo and #Tanzania and what she calls being subjected to the will of one person! She states in English “Freedom is coming” #HumanRights#shangazipower
@ChademaTz official @chacha_heche explains that he talked earlier to the District Commanding Officer (OCD) to inform him that they will pass on that route and they agreed! But in Nyamongo #Tanzania the police tried to disperse a large crowd with tear gas #HumanRights
Testimonials from people on the ground courtesy from @ChademaTz about the beatings they received- they explain that police beat them with sticks, took away phone, shoes
This happened earlier today in Nyamongo #Tanzania and some were passerbys #HumanRights
This motorcycle driver (bodaboda) recounts how police beat him, tore his @ChademaTz and destroyed his motorcycle
Video courtesy of @ChademaTz officials on the ground #Tanzania
Video from Nyamongo #Tanzania showing this man called Ngoka Mwita Maginga in visible pain after being hit by police and detained at the station. Latest update on the ground from @ChademaTz police have not issued necessary PF3 form that would allow him to be treated in hospital
Police issued a statement that the tear gas was to disperse an unknown group of people (not identified as supporters of @ChademaTz or any other party) who attacked and threw stones at the police in Nyamongo
(Video @tanpol ) #Tanzania
This is the brother of the injured man whose video was released yesterday night! The police still have detained Ngoka and he has not received medical attention
Ngoka was detained in the morning on his way to see and greet @TunduALissu
Video from Nyamongo #Tanzania today: This clearly agitated mother has spent her day looking for her son Chacha George who has not been seen ever since the police took him yesterday. She has been to court, hospital and seen injured detainees at police station but not her son!

Tanzania: Uhuru hatarini kuelekea Uchaguzi hrw.org/sw/news/2020/0…
Tanzania: Freedoms Threatened Ahead of Elections hrw.org/news/2020/09/0… #Tanzania authorities have stepped up repression of opposition parties, nongovernmental organizations, and the media ahead of the country’s general elections
This @hrw report is tip of the iceberg!
"Two editors of independent newspapers, .. said that officials had informally told them not to publish material that the government would not like... they had been “subtly warned” not to give prominent coverage to .. @TunduALissu and @BenMembe " @hrw #Tanzania
"The authorities have suspended organizations for perceived political activities and for work protecting the rights of LGBT people" hrw.org/news/2020/09/0…
Forget about even basic human rights! @hrw #Tanzania
Mwendo wa kueleweshana
US Congress imeazimia mambo mazito lakini ni baada ya kujiridhisha matukio, uvunjaji wa haki za binadamu na mengine mengi.
Sasa ngoja tuone wale mahodari wakija kuonyesha uhodari wao 🙄 #TutaelewanaTu#ChangeTanzania
"Whereas the Govt of Tanzania’s denial of the existence of COVID19 ... and suppression of information related to the pandemic has not only placed citizens’ health at risk, but has also violated citizens’ freedom of speech and right of access to information" mkafungia @kwanza_tv
"Whereas, in September 2019, the Government of Tanzania amended both the Companies Act and Nongovernmental Organization Act, which have severely restricted the ability of civil society organizations working on democracy and human rights to receive foreign funds" Mahodari nyie!
