In the last 45 minutes, Kellyanne Conway has demanded her 15-year-old daughter issue a correction on her TikTok about the sequencing of her covid tests
Claudia Conway is basically the only reputable source of information about the Trump White House at the minute
The videos are also an interesting insight into the way a mother treats her daughter, and don't reflect well on Kellyanne Conway. Anyway, Claudia is live now
Nearly 18,000 people are watching Claudia Conway live on TikTok talking about her recovery from covid, which she got from her mother. The 15-year-old says she wants to donate blood if she gets antibodies. "For a little bit there, I thought I was going to die. My lungs do hurt"
"The thing that worries me most about covid is we don't really know much about it," says Claudia Conway. Also worth pointing out: she got 405 different virtual gifts from viewers during the livestream, which translates into (a small amount of) $$$
Anyway, Claudia's TikTok has been ~a thing~ for a while now, but when you have her mother literally demanding she post a rebuttal/clarification as if it's a media outlet, you know things have kind of stepped up a gear
Also hilariously bad timing for the high-profile journalism-adjacent TikTok star to have dunked on internet culture reporters tracking Claudia Conway's TikTok literally hours before all this
Anyway, if you want some indication of why you should care about this:
- Claudia Conway is single-handedly puncturing the narrative Trump's team are trying to build about his illness
- Her videos are seen an average of 1.6m times each
- 53% of her audience are 18-24
Claudia Conway's grown her follower numbers on TikTok 17% in the last 30 days as she's rebutted the White House narrative around the response to covid-19. She's also got a crazy number of active TikTok users as followers (95%)
She's back live again (at 1:30am local time), and her viewer numbers have risen to 23,000. She's also talking in pig Latin/gibberish, which is the point you start to worry. "If CPS [child protection services] comes and I get sent away, just know I like you guys a little bit."
And her livestream ends again. "I'm ok," she says, holding up a peace sign. I guess I have another chapter for my book canburypress.com/products/tik-t…
Update: Claudia Conway just privated the last two videos of her mother screaming at her - the one Kellyanne Conway demanded she post, clarifying the number and sequencing of her covid tests, remains online
Meanwhile Kellyanne Conway just tweeted this. It is gone 2:15am there
Summed up everything for @businessinsider: the TikTok profile of a 15-year-old teenager is the biggest thorn in the side of the Trump campaign right now businessinsider.com/claudia-conway…
Claudia Conway has posted a link to a Google Doc attacking media coverage of her TikTok
This is also worth reading, on the challenges of a 15-year-old providing newsworthy information and the ethical and emotional challenges involved in reporting that. A lot of it reflects the thought processes I had in my reporting yesterday vox.com/the-goods/2020…

SCOOP: One in four Brits - 17 million people - are on TikTok, according to internal data I obtained for @business bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
The user numbers, which TikTok has refused to share publicly, date from earlier this summer and cover all of Europe. In the UK:
🙋‍♀️ 65% of users are women
👨‍🎓 4/10 are 18-24
🕙 People spend 66 minutes a day

Previous internal data I've obtained but not reported on before, from Q1 2020, shows TikTok added 7 million monthly active users during the pandemic in the UK bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

A court hearing to determine whether TikTok is banned in the US today starts in Washington DC in 10 minutes. On a Sunday. Really. Lots has been happening overnight, with the tech industry saying a ban would be damaging
There are 29 other participants on the call, seven minutes before the hearing begins. Hello to everyone else wondering how the hell this madness is going to end
The sole silver lining of 2020 and the work from home movement means I am able to do court reporting in a different country while also doing the ironing

My wrap-up of TikTok's two hearings in front of lawmakers this week in the UK and Australia for @businessinsider. TikTok reps, including @CSORoland, try to get their message across but politicians don't want to hear it because of TikTok's roots in China businessinsider.com/tiktok-probed-…
This exchange between TikTok's chief security officer and a gammony Australian senator over a factually incorrect claim that TikTok and Douyin share the same source code kind of typified the week Image
This was quite an emblematic moment. At one point later in the hearing @JimMolan said he was "very interested in [the] *opinion*" that TikTok's chief security officer said under oath that TikTok and Douyin's source code was different

You can tell a lot about a man by his office background, and here's @CSORoland's. This is a man focused on risk. Image
Lee Hunter, TikTok's Australia general manager: "It's early days for [TikTok] in Australia... we're hiring quickly, on track to double our team by the end of the year. With our success comes added scrutiny. We don't want TikTok to be a political football." Image
Few people outside Australia seem to have noticed that TikTok went up in front of the Australian Senate overnight UK time. I'm about 10 minutes in so far and there's a lot of similar themes with the UK DCMS Committee

Reaching a new record where I've contacted eight (8) authors on an academic paper to try and cover it and haven't had a response from any of them in four (4) days
Me on Friday: Oh cool, this will be a really simple 300-word story that'll take like, an hour
Me today: Do these academics not want their work promoted in any way?
I am also looking at you, @UniofOxford, whose press office doesn't seem to want to reply to my email either

Big day for TikTok as it releases its H1 2020 transparency report and its head of public policy in Europe, @theobertram, appears in front of @CommonsDCMS. Will be doing a thread through the day, but first off, the transparency report: there's been a 2x increase in video removals Image
From just shy of 49 million videos taken down in H2 2019, TikTok took down 104.5 million in H1 2020. Proportions of the types of videos taken down stayed broadly the same with the December 2019 numbers they reported
TikTok says the number of videos, though they doubled in absolute number, remained at "less than 1% of all videos on TikTok". We know thanks to my reporting here that at least 5 million videos are uploaded every hour businessinsider.com/leaked-tiktok-…
