I'm seeing a lot of Chris Dorner references online lately, and I do understand why. But I wish people would think more about Monica Quan, the 28-year-old assistant coach at Cal-State Fullerton he murdered.
Quan was shot alongside her fiance. These are their pictures.
Dorner's rage was understandable, his fury at a bigoted system was righteous. But his actions were not.
Quan's fiance, Keith Lawrence, was a campus cop at USC. Does this make him a participant in a broken and vile system? Yes. Does it justify he and his fiance's death?
I struggle every day with a deep well of rage over the horrific things I have watched police do to other people. I can only imagine how much stronger Dorner's rage must have been. On a moral level, I can justify many different actions to fight such a system. But not this.
The LAPD is absolutely a culprit, both in Dorner's tragedy and in a million others over the years.
But when we decide bullets are the only solution for the people involved, and at the periphery, of such a system, we have reached a place even worse than where we started.

I am broadly optimistic about the impact of the President's (accidental?) platforming of the Proud Boys. Part of why the group has been allowed to get away with so much violence is that they've been all-but ignored by the media and law enforcement.
"Antifa" has been the bogeyman for even moderate liberals in media through most of Trump's term. Every bottle and punch thrown generated headlines and thinkpieces. The Proud Boys barely got mentioned unless they committed a truly heinous mass assault (New York)
I am quite critical of "sunlight is the best disinfectant" as a blanket statement.
But in this case? I think sunlight might destroy the Proud Boys. Even MINOR action by law enforcement is deeply disruptive, because almost none of these guys believe enough to do time.
If you are concerned that the U.S. may collapse into a civil war, or that it is in the opening stages of one, you owe it to yourself to read this thread.
I am here around Delta Park. The Proud Boy numbers are hard to ascertain, because they are hanging out in groups. Guess would be 300. Definitely not thousands, at least not yet.
Here is the largest group I can see here. They seem to be guarding a mound of sand. I hear chants of "fuck antifa". Not very loud.
Very nice antihate signs are posted at the entrance
Since it seems this might be useful to many: you can make your clothing flame retardant (NOT FIREPROOF) by mixing 13 oz of pure Borax into very hot water, putting into a spray bottle, and thoroughly covering your clothes.
I'm in SE Portland, doing errands, where I just ran across this. The short story is that a drunk man attempted to buy beer from a Plaid Pantry. He was turned down and peeled hard out of the parking lot, where he struck the guide wire on that pole.
You can see the parking lot better in this shot.
After crashing, the driver crawled out and, according to a witness, accused passersby of being "Antifa" and having caused the crash.
At present, the Plaid Pantry is temporarily closed while the firefighters attempt to figure out how to get he truck down.
Riot declared in East Portland. During the stand off with State Police, molotovs or some other incendiary detonate in the crowd. Police respond with mass impact weapon fire..
Police and the crowd have a dramatic exchange of fire. The crowd begins to retreat.
