Let us compare the rate of new cases in the UK and Switzerland (from @OurWorldInData): both countries are clearly on the path of exponential growth, and are therefore beyond the 'tipping point'. Btw, the same applies to France or the Netherlands.
What needs to be done now? 2/6
Jonathan Van-Tam (like @alain_berset) is not announcing any new measures but appealing to people to stick to the measures already in place.
Let's compare the stringency of measures in place in the UK and Switz.
3/6
Interestingly, the measures in the UK are actually stricter than those in Switzerland, according to the Coronavirus Government Response Tracker of @BlavatnikSchool at @UniofOxford (see bit.ly/36TZw8B).
For example... 4/6
... there are regional lockdowns in the UK, and restrictions on gatherings of fewer than 10 people, although compliance with these measures may be less than 100%.
If the UK cannot control its epidemic with these measures can Switzerland do it with a less stringent approach?
5/6
Unlikely.
The Swiss Covid strategy urgently needs to be reviewed. As Jonathan Van-Tam says, it is now time to act quickly to avoid history from repeating itself.
Changing posters to orange, and appealing to people to act responsibly (Eigenverantwortung) will not be enough.
