Nos. 126 to 144 (even numbers), and 166 to 184 (even numbers) built Phoenix Ballarat 1876-79.
Subsequently known as F class.

Nos. 172-184 (even numbers) were rebuilt as 2-4-2T tank engines in 1910-11 and were classed as F Motors. The last of the F class tender engines was scrapped in 1925.

Only surviving F class is F Motor 176. Sold to H. V. Mackay for shunting at Sunshine Harvester Works, became Massey-Ferguson (Aust) Pty Ltd and F 176 continued in shunting duties till 1961. Donated to ARHS Williamstown. Oldest preserved VR locomotive. australiansteam.com/F176.htm

It is a bit tragic that some of the earlier VR locomotives were not preserved. F 176 was built as 2-4-0 in 1879.
VR records suggest all other F motors were scrapped by 1929. Last being no. 174. This photograph taken by my Grandfather is a F motor. The younger lad is my father, other lad uncle. My father was born 1929 so this dates c. 1934. This is probably no. 176.

The F class were a useful loco for VR. They were a copy of the Beyer Peacock 1873 pattern loco as tender engines, so no surprise.
