Maryland GOP Governor Larry Hogan is not showing courage, leadership, or love of democracy in throwing away a vote.
The kind of courage required by conservatives when confronted with an extremist is described by Levitsky & Ziblatt (How Democracies Die) washingtonpost.com/politics/larry…
Correct. (I forgot to tag @GovLarryHogan in the first tweet.)
Hogan's gesture is not only a cowardly and weak (and pointless), he is also perpetuating a false narrative.
To those defending Hogan: The gesture encourages continued hyperpolarization.
It signifies Party over Country, and personal ambition over what is best for the nation.
If now Biden is best for the nation, have the courage to say so.
He's setting himself up to continue. . .
. . . Trump-style combativeness, which Americans are getting tired of.
He's continuing "us v. them" politics by saying, "I can't vote for 'us' but I refuse to vote for 'them.'
I am suggesting that the "I will never vote Dem" attitude is part of the problem that brought us here.
The gesture was cowardly and hurts a country that wants to heal and come together.
People are SICK of the hyperpolarization and want it to end.
Also, who are these voters?
The GOP got into its current mess when it outsourced voter mobilization to organizations like FOX and the NRA, which then forced them to cater to an increasingly extremist voting base.
A true conservative party would not cater to an extremist base.
This is the cynicism that destroys democracy. It says "all politicians are self-interested liars" which leads to tribalism: "He's a liar, but he's OUR liar."
The antidote: Hold on to your ideals.
If you need help, listen to Schiff's closing arguments in the impeachment trial.
The question Republicans will have to ask themselves going forward is what kind of party they want to be.
Do they want to return to the 2015 GOP, i.e. the current GOP minus Trump, or do they want to rebuild a true conservative party?
The problem with @GovLarryHogan's gestures is that he is basically saying that the only problem with the Fox-Trump-GOP is Trump.
Take out Trump and the GOP is fine.
The problem is that the current GOP is not conservative. It is reactionary / regressive / extremists.
If the Democrats win the White House but lose the Senate, we will tread water for the next 2 years.
The slide toward autocracy will be stopped.
But we won't make much progress.
If the Democrats win the Senate, the next two years will move us forward.
We can never stop. Democracy means government by the people.
Example: The long term solution to the problem with how elections are conducted in Georgia is to elect people who are competent and care about well-run elections.
Voter suppression was a problem in California in the 1980s and 1990s. Then California turned blue and elected Democrats to office, and now it's easy to vote here.
🔹Biden's lead has expanded to more than 10 points in the polling aggregate.
🔹COVID cases are spiking.
🔹The New York Times has released information about Trump money laundering and tax fraud.
The Trump team has a plan . . . another disinformation campaign 🙄🤦♂️
Trump has no interest in actually governing. He never had any interest in governing. He just wants an audience so he can play a "winner" on TV. He thought, like any starring role, playing a World Leader would be a great way to get rich.
I suspect his "fans" (the ones who go to rallies) want to be entertained. Politics is boring. They don't understand it or have the patience for it.
Trump tells them they're the elite, and would be at the top of the hierarchy if the 'others' weren't taking what belongs to them.
The explanation is that Trump is incapable of doing anything other than what he is doing. He can't plan. He can't govern. He can't alter his behavior. He can't care whether people die of COVID.
