This is a really important and undercovered story, so, drumroll… a *thread*
Domestic violence agencies across the country have been grappling with their role in the #BLM movement. They face unique pressure as they partner with law enforcement and take $ from criminal justice sources.
However many recognize the ways in which the criminal justice system perpetrates harm and violence, too.
These conversations have been going on internally, with plenty of disagreement. But some DV agencies have gone out on a limb and PUBLICLY stood in support of black lives, and against police brutality.
In Wisconsin, Embrace, a local domestic violence organization put up BLM signs and posted an anti-racism statement online. Then, the backlash started.
Eight days later, Embrace lost $25k in funding from one of the counties it operates in. Because of its position on Black Lives Matter.
Then, it began hearing from local law enforcement agencies that they would no longer be partning with Embrace.

EMBRACE IS THE ONLY DV ORGANIZATION FOR FOUR COUNTIES.
Anyway, please read the whole story and share. Victims deserve better. bit.ly/3lRb0Oy

A morning thread on policing, domestic violence and criminal justice reform, re my latest story:

bit.ly/30eLMSS
There is a long history of lawmakers exploiting women's victimization to expand the criminal justice system and stymie reform.
Fetal rights laws, for example were passed in the wake of horrific murders of pregnant women, often domestic violence victims. While designed ostensibly to 'protect' women, they've been used against them when they miscarry or have an abortion.
