Today LAPD chose to arrest someone for trying to stop a crime instead of...you know...stopping the crime. When I arrived, a man who identified himself as Dean was next to a locked U-Haul that had been loaded with the belongings of an unhoused man who was not present.
He said he was told by his employer to do so. Clearly he was trying to do his job. However, it's obvious that taking belongings that don't belong to you & that you were not told to collect by the owner, is stealing. Committing a crime cuz your boss told you isn't a valid defense.
It was explained to Dean that he was taking someone's belongings and he did not have the right to do so. We asked him to unlock the truck so we could unload it. He then called the cops. Eventually they rolled up with several cars. 4-6 I would say and like ten officers.
There were maybe 7 of us trying to prevent Dean from completing the robbery. We told the cops what happened. They said in order to do anything, they needed the person whose property it is. This of course is not true.
Regardless, the owner of the property made his way back to the scene and was willing to talk to the cops. This was very brave of him as previous interactions with cops as an unhoused person, as you might imagine, were not great.
Under the guise of coming over to talk to the person whose property it was, they then arrested Tommy who had been first on the scene. Six cops surrounded him and made "a citizen's arrest" saying Dean filled out a form and they were just transporting.
The man whose property it was, seeing the cops become aggressive and arresting the person standing closest to him, left out of what I assumed was the fear the same would happen to him. As they put Tommy in the car, they began shoving multiple people.
While there was this distraction, the thief hurried over to the U-Haul and got in preparing to drive away. They then threatened to tow everyone's cars. Again, as a distraction to enable the thief to get away.
I stepped in front of the U-Haul to try and stop the crime and two cops started shoving me and threatening to arrest me. Yes, that's right. They assaulted me to enable a robbery lmao.
This is like if someone broke into your house and loaded up a truck with your shit, a neighbor called the cops, the cops showed up and gave them the thumbs up, then arrested your neighbor. Their literal defense was we can't stop crimes.
The cops OPENLY ADMIT they have NO DESIRE to stop crimes!!! I'm tweeting this story because it's important for us to openly fight back when shit like this is happening. This was a private citizen. Just some dude. That decided he could carry out a sweep of his own accord.
We cannot let normal ass people think they have the authority to do shit like this. The state will protect this behavior and it is on us to try our best to protect each other. Know what Tommy did when he was released? Encourage folks to check on the guy whose stuff had been taken
Anyway, this is how it is. There is no inbetween. You are either fighting to keep this shit from happening or letting it happen. Please have a conversation with yourself about which side you're on.

If you didn't know, @davidryu4u (running for City Council in LA) called @GroundGameLA an extremist group that promotes hate and violence. I can't express to you how serious it is to have an elected official say something like this. (thread)
These sorts of claims against community-led groups, historically, have emboldened cops, the FBI, & sometimes just random ass people to harass, infiltrate, surveil, and/or MURDER people. A supposed progressive Dem (his words, not mine) invoking this sort of attack is significant.
I realize some of you may not know what @GroundGameLA is. We are a grassroots group connecting communities with resources, recourse, and organizing strategies. We fight for systemic change and empower people to join that fight in whatever way they can. groundgamela.org/our-mission
I know that America has trained you to think you can solve any problem with more capitalism but buying stamps is not what's going to ensure a fair election. Hate to break it to you but we never have fair elections. Suppression & disenfranchisement is a constant reality. (thread)
I think it's in our best interest to focus on things we can organize around to ensure a better (still not fair) election and take some comfort in knowing concerns about the post office disappearing have been around for years and it's still here.
These are results from pre-2016 election about how we need to save the post office: google.com/search?biw=124…
I regret to inform you that @MitchOFarrell is still on his bullshit. When word got around that a family with an infant moved into Echo Park, he showed his dusty ass up and then bragged about it during his "Councilmember in Your Corner" event that was conveniently right after.
The family has been there for weeks. So it either took him that long to hear about it or it took him that long to do something. Either way, not great! After firing @AshleyNicholeB for trying to set a meeting between him and the folks at Echo Park in January, he's ignored them.
Don't trust when a councilmember shows up to make it seem like someone needed saving. No one needs saving, @MitchOFarrell. People need support, community, and resources.
I've already hit on why #8cantwait bugged so I decided to do some digging just to see what's up. Campaign Zero is a project of We the Protestors which is affiliated with an Obama Task Force on 21st Century Policing. Already I'm laughing.
The Obama Foundation promotes them but their available paperwork is all kind of circuitous and lacks detail. They've worked hard to conceal this information which is weird because 501c3's like to celebrate their donors.
NPs are pretty transparent cuz the people that donate to them WANT to be recognized as being good lil millionaires yet I couldn't find who their current donors are (though I found something about their 2017 board.) All we have on the website is 3 members of the "planning team."
As the original Donald Glover stan, I will now give my two cents on This is America armed with my Sick Boi mixtape and IAMDONALD ticket stub. Everyone is now hip to the Jim Crow imagery which I think is meant to be taken several ways.
#1 How DG/CG has felt for sometime. Either you’re the thug or the comedic relief. But what happens when you’re not one and you’re tired of being the other? I think that's the question he's been trying to answer with his career.
#2. The way people want to separate his art from that of other black artists. He has no interest in separating himself as evidence his work is "high brow." His greatness does not depend on shitting on other black artists.
