2 days ago I tweeted about @RepDougCollins using his military uniform in a @CollinsforGA campaign ad. It's much worse and advocates are calling for a real investigation and UCMJ punishment for the Congressman for violating DOD regs and norms. Strap in for a thread! #Georgia
So what's the reg? DoD Directive 1344.10, “Political Activities by Members of the Armed Forces,” details what is and what is not allowed in campaign materials for active, reserve, or retired members of the military running for office. It's very precise. esd.whs.mil/Portals/54/Doc…
Only photos of the candidate in uniform allowed are photos as part of the their biographical information, when accompanied by other non-military photos, and when also accompanied by a disclaimer stating that the appearance of the photo in uniform doesn’t imply a DoD endorsement.
Collins blows off this bit: "4.3.2.1. Use or allow the use of photographs, drawings, and other similar media formats of themselves in uniform as the primary graphic representation in any campaign media, such as a billboard, brochure, flyer, Web site, or television commercial."
Why is Collins actions so egregious? He's not just an old veteran leveraging his time in service. No, he's a currently serving U.S. Air Force Reserve Chaplain. He is stomping on the regulation and the UCMJ and daring the military to stop him. Inexplicably...they are not. Why?
DOD has no problem rolling in on even the smallest violations of this regulation by Active, National Guard or Reserve members. 2 USAR soldiers and their chain-of-command in American Samoa have been punished for a brief appearance during the DNC. stripes.com/news/army/dod-…
But look at Doug Collins. He has put out ad after ad in direct violation of the law. This undermines the sacred trust of the American people that their military is apolitical. The swear an oath to the Constitution not to a party or President. It is the cornerstone our Republic.
He's grossly politicizing the uniform. Where is @EsperDoD and @USAFReserve Commanding General LTG Richard Scobee? Why are you allowing such a blatant violation? Why are you not issuing a cease and desist and bring him up on charges? It doesn't matter if he is a Congressman.
It's outrageous that he is doing it and even more disgusting that the political messages include such barely veiled racist messages like this ad targeting Stacey Abrams. Collins isn't just wrapping himself in the uniform he is using it as a weapon and it's unacceptable.
The team at the Military Religious Freedom Foundation under @MikeyWeinstein has sent a letter to Secretary Esper demanding he be brought up on charges for this outrageous behavior. Other VSO's are silent. #MRFF dailykos.com/stories/2020/1…
Bottom line is Doug Collins campaign to win a Senate seat in Georgia has involved multiple violations of DOD Regulations. Any service member would face criminal investigations and punishment. This officer deserves the same. Also vote for Raphael Warnock. #LincolnProject

I spent the weekend diving into the IRS Form 990's for the Tommy Tuberville Foundation after reading how so little of the money went to the mission of supporting veterans. I've been a veterans advocate for 10 yrs and seen a lot of these. Strap in for a long thread! #Alabama
I looked at the 990's published by ProPublica (projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/org…). You won't find them on the foundations website or any information about the officers, legal framework or donations. But, you will find out how AWESOME TOMMY IS and how much he loves the troops!
The accounting and paperwork is an absolute mess. Different forms every year, different addresses, wildly missed reporting numbers, totals that don't add up and bizarre financial choices. At a minimum the foundation has been incredibly poorly and unprofessionally managed.

Remember when Trump blamed military and law enforcement for Hope Hicks getting COVID? It never made sense why she, and now him, would blame military personnel for giving it to them. Well...did you know there was a Gold Star Mother's Day event at the White House on Sunday?
What he said on Thursday “It’s very, very hard when you are with people from the military or law enforcement, and they come over to you, and they want to hug you, and they want to kiss you, because we really have done a good job for them. And you get close and things happen"
Now we know. Look at these photos from the event Tweeted out by the First Lady. No masks. No social distancing. They were all hanging out like normal the day after the super spreader event for Amy Coney Barrett. ImageImage

I respect Kavanaugh’s position but he is wrong on a host of levels and it all starts with his status as a currently serving officer. When we retire we are citizens again. (1)

Retired military leaders shouldn’t endorse for president - Los Angeles Times latimes.com/opinion/story/…
The old saying that perspective is a matter of where you sit is on point here. I took off my uniform and enjoy the full rights of an American citizen as do these generals. I disagree with...well most of them but they have every right to speak out. (2)
I was especially put off by this nugget: “For one thing, the American public tends not to distinguish between active and retired generals.” Really? He uses Mattis as an example but he was a political appointee. We are in a fight for our country and I want all hands on deck. (3)

Enjoyed speaking with @ReidForgrave for this piece about the “losers” and “suckers” comments by Donald Trump—

Minnesota veterans disturbed by reports of Trump denigrating military — if they believe them strib.mn/3huIOOJ @ProjectLincoln #LincolnVeteran
Fred Wellman, a lifelong Republican who served three tours in Iraq, is now the senior adviser for veterans affairs for the Lincoln Project. The political action committee connects former and current Republicans to defeat Trump in 2020.
Wellman’s phone has been blowing up since the Atlantic report: “It cuts to the very core of who we are as military members,” he said. “We revere our dead.” He knows the base won’t shift. But he aims to move only 1 to 4% of Republican or independent voters away from Trump.

I've known GEN McConville since I was a Captain. I know that like me he feels the loss of every soldier that fell under his command. I know his kids serve now. Any idiot that thinks a soldier goes to war for arms makers or otherwise is an idiot. Especially the coward Trump.
It's a diversion. Now he announces troop withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan without strategy or reason. He is just running around trying to divert us from the fact he has always hated people who serve. Even his denials have confirmed the contempt he feels deep in his bones.
He went to Dover four times in four years. Once he brought Jon Voight who happened to be visiting the White House. Another time he swung by on the way back from a MAGA rally with a plane full of his bootlickers. We are props for his ego and campaign.

Trump is not playing 3D chess! Everyone's really missing the boat on his attack on the military yesterday. He didn't suddenly decide to attack the 'military-industrial' complex. This is about the Military Times poll last week showing officers have an unfavorable view of him. (1)
In that poll more than 59% of officers said they have an unfavorable view of Trump, with more than half saying they strongly disapprove. Among enlisted respondents, 47% said they have an unfavorable view, and nearly 39% a favorable view. Get it? He sees a split and piles on. (2)
Here's what he actually said. Look at this quote with that number above in mind: “I'm not saying the military's in love with me – the soldiers are. The top people in the Pentagon probably aren't because they want to do nothing but fight wars so that...." (3)
