Due to COVID-19, the income USC receiver Munir McClain earned reselling high-end sneakers slowed. Money was tight.
So he applied for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.
In California, the PUA benefits promised a minimum benefit of $767 per week
McClain pocketed the money, with plans to invest it in a new apparel brand he started with his siblings, BeenFree. latimes.com/sports/usc/sto…
The NCAA does not bar athletes from earning income, either from outside businesses or through self-employment. Its rules do not cover unemployment benefits, and such assistance would not affect an athlete’s eligibility, an NCAA rep told the Times. latimes.com/sports/usc/sto…
The McClains are resolute in their belief that Munir has done nothing wrong and the specifics of his suspension and the FBI's interest in him remain unclear to the family.
McClain is not the only college student to file for unemployment benefits under PUA. Self-employed people, gig workers, independent contractors, part-time workers are eligible for the temporary benefit and full-time students may qualify, if they meet certain requirements.
