How long do #neutrophils live? Are they all equal or do they adapt to tissues?

Key points in thread 👇
We created a fate-mapping model to measure neutrophil #lifespans in many healthy tissues: absolute lifetimes are short and variable, but much longer that expected! (A day or more!)
#singlecell omic analyses showed clear variations in neutrophil phenotypes across tissues by looking at surface markers, transcription profiles and epigenetic landscapes
neutrophils like #macrophages adopt phenotypes unique to the tissue
#Reprogramming of neutrophils occurs in the tissue, not in remote locations or affected by the microbiota. In the tissue itself. This is one of my favorite experiments in the paper.
Do these changes correlate with specialized functions? Pathway analyses suggest so. We validate predicted #angiogenic properties in specific areas of the #intestine
Support of #hematopoiesis in bone marrow and spleen, as illustrated for B lymphopoiesis here ⬇️
Coolest for last. The #lung harbors neutrophils with a distinct angiogenic and inflammatory profile in defined #CXCL12 vascular #niches. They appear to be important for vascular tissue.
A thought: neutrophils are so much more than antimicrobial cells. I like to think of then as migratory, adaptable, tissue-specialized workers. So much still to learn!!
