The people who have a "by any means necessary" reaction to one death suddenly turn into procedure hawks at 1,000 daily deaths.
If we think Europe and the US are dying out of arrogant unwillingness to learn from Asia, it follows that cultural intervention is required.
So, for example, habituating the natives to taking orders from non-Westerners through targeted hiring programs would be very good.
The US has been better at it than we have been, though sadly not with that focus (e.g. higher-rank cops in the US are whiter).
Target groups include cops (only 1% POC in Germany, I believe), teachers, and, above all, legislators and ministers.
This is the most valuable in there-is-no-alternative cases - Macron has no competition, thus he should trigger all of white France's fears.
He made sure LREM's legislative caucus is 50% women. Well, for next time: aim for 15% POC, and make sure to appoint hijabi ministers.
It's useful to ensure that the person who announces such orders as indoor dining bans and mandatory centralized quarantine won't be white.
The extremists will hate it. But they follow orders - if not now, then after the mass arrests make it clear toleration of rioting is over.
In effect, it's a social rewiring: in every little community, the rioter is to be sent to the bottom of the local pecking order.
Today, that's only the case in communities of color - Islamists know e.g. refusing to shake an opposite-sex person's hand has consequences.
But it's not the Islamists who are killing us. If it were, Bild and Darmanin would be talking about that, not about 1 murder.
It's the white natives - especially the populists, but I've been yelled at by queer leftists too for saying Asia is handling corona better.
The same cultural suppression, which has been a genuine success for low-income communities of color, must be deployed against white natives.
This is where the habituation to taking orders from the other (which every immigrant and every person of color knows) is important.
White Europeans who, for example, refuse to work under a nonwhite manager, should be summarily fired.
The hijab should be legalized like homosexuality, that is, turned rapidly from illegal to protected, e.g. at work and at school.
The racists will hate it, but, politically, in most of Europe, they have no alternative, and will seethe quietly.
Racist parents will hate seeing their child taught by a hijabi, but the state runs the schools, not the racist parents; this isn't America.
They can vote for the populists - but suppressing corona is an amazing crowd pleaser, and nobody will care about 10 dead Nazi rioters.
They can riot - but white riots are common in Europe in context of social toleration of such behavior; they can be suppressed.
They can't emigrate, because they are disproportionately monolingual and low-education.
They will resent the state forever for not giving in to their prejudices, but I don't want their love, I want them to stop spreading corona.
It's not plan A, but whatever it takes. In the EU, 1,300 people were confirmed dead of corona yesterday; this number will rise.
Nor are these two issues - corona and racism - unrelated. White violence is excused in Europe as the voice of the forgotten.
And it's precisely this white violence that politically stymies any serious attempt to deal with the second wave.
A long-term program of culturally de-Westernizing the European public would generally be good, but I am specifically not discussing that.
Rather, this is about ensuring that the people who would kill themselves and others to avoid admitting the eggheads were right do as told.
This is about creating the conditions to ensure that people who test positive go to centralized quarantine without threatening to riot.
It's about making sure that universal vaccination happens as soon as possible, even over anti-vaxx objections.
It's about making sure that on the downswing when Europe finally bends the curve, people won't go back to partying until 0.
Forced cultural change is a means, not an end. Thus, for example, not serving European food at quarantine hotels serves no purpose.
In contrast, appointing ministers and public health officials of color sends a necessary (and good) signal: there's a world outside Europe.
The habituation program reinforces this signal: there's a world outside Europe, and its values are in this crisis superior to Europe's.
Thus the state must force white Europeans to get over their revulsion with the hijab, the yarmulke, the black skin, the epicanthic fold.
The point isn't that this is good; it is, but that's not relevant. It's necessary.
It's been around an hour and a half since I started writing this. ~100 Europeans and ~75 Americans have died since. /end

In Israel, the number of new infections has fallen by a factor of 4.5 in 15 days. That's with a lockdown, not much centralized quarantining.
Imagine we had this. There might be a week-long plateau, as Israel had in the first week of October, during the transition.
We had 140,000 new infections EU-wide yesterday. And then after a month of this, we'd have 7,000.

1. Western economies outperform Korea on stuff like promotion based on merit, not facetime. Korea does better on urbanization and education.
2. But urbanization and education are controlled away in total factor productivity, making Korea look less efficient overall.
3. But this is wrong! Korea isn't just catching up. Half its population lives in one megacity; no other country is that urban.

1. Is Nordic culture really collectivist? Some examples of how it really isn't by any common non-Nordic standards.
2. The method I'm using is to compare pairs of non-Nordic cultures, like the US and Germany, and see where the Nordics fit.
3. Exhibit 1: in the US, stores open 7 days a week; in Germany, they close on Sundays, justified on social and religious grounds.

Empirically? Probably nothing. Race does not correlate with crime in the US after you correct for poverty rates.
And the black-white income gap in the US is... maybe 25%? So about the same as Italy-Germany.
NCVS! The ratio depends on how you count - it's higher for multiple-offender crime. Averaged over victims, it's 2.

Thirst-posting: I ran out of water last night, and the 24/7 Spätis closed overnight because of corona restrictions.
I finished a large bottle of water this morning on the way back from Aldi.
I think the restriction is only on overnight booze sales, but the Spätis just closed. I guess they don't make money on chocolate? :(

1. Mini-thread on excess deaths and an error in @OurWorldInData re corona. They added South Korea, which looks like this: Image
2. In other words, per the tracker, South Korea has 20% excess deaths for people aged 85+, and has since before the crisis started.
3. @OurWorldInData also thinks Korea had more excess deaths than Germany interwave. (Ignore the last few weeks, the data is laggy.) Image
