As I was interviewing two QAnon supporters in New Mexico at a pro-Trump demonstration, a volunteer who said she was with the Trump campaign — and wore a Trump credential — came up and told me she was instructed by the campaign to stand next to me and monitor my interview.
At political events, this has occasionally happened to me. During the Dem primary this year, for instance, a staffer working for Michael Bloomberg tried to follow me around as I conducted interviews with people who showed up to a debate watch party at a Bloomberg campaign office.
The Trump campaign staffer today came up in the middle of my interview with the QAnon supporters. The man wore a t shirt that advertised his belief in the conspiracy (he said his wife bought it for him). It’s possible QAnon wasn’t what got them worried, but it seemed that way.
