BREAKING—huge CDC report on hospitalized healthcare workers w/ #COVID19, which comprise 1 in 16.7 (6%) of all hospitalized cases!

📌10% hospitalized had zero risk factor! (Median age only 49, so not old at all)

📌Whopping 36% hospitalized were nurses! 🧵

2) It gets worse, despite being healthcare workers themselves, of these hospitalized #COVID19 HCWs:

📌Approximately 28% of these patients were admitted to an intensive care unit

📌16% required invasive mechanical ventilation

📌4% died

And gets worse for blacks...
3) And a whopping *52%* of all hospitalized healthcare workers were Black.

Contrast: Blacks are 13% of the U.S. population, and blacks constitute only 5% of all doctors and 10% of nurses.

Concerning—The coronavirus can remain on some surfaces for 28 days, including phone screens, paper money, & stainless steel, according to a new study. Around room temp of 68 degrees F, #SARSCoV2 could last for 28 days on smooth surfaces. 🧵 #COVID19

2) “The study also found that the virus survived longer at lower temperatures and tended to last longer on non-porous or smooth surfaces such as glass and stainless steel rather than porous or rough surfaces such as cotton.”
3) “At higher temperatures, the survival time decreased as the temperature increased, and on cotton, the virus wasn’t detectable after 14 days.
However, the study was conducted in the dark to remove the effect of UV light, which can inactivate the virus.

BREAKING: *2* of VP Pence’s aides, including Chief of Staff Marc Short has just tested positive for #COVID19. However, despite Pence being deem a close contact, Pence is not quarantining and will not be cancelling his campaign schedule!
2) official excuse for VP not quarantining: “While Vice President Pence is considered a close contact with Mr. Short, in consultation with the White House Medical Unit, the Vice President will maintain his schedule in accordance with the CDC guidelines for essential personnel.”
3) the other positive case was Pence’s political advisor Marty Obst. Positive this week but just reported tonight. Last in contact with Pence a week ago. About incubation time. google.com/amp/s/www.bloo…

2) “The R-squared of CovidCast’s mask and symptom data is 0.73, meaning that you can predict about 73 percent of the variability in state-level covid-19 symptom prevalence simply by knowing how often people wear their masks.”
3) Granted “correlation does not always equal causation”... but also remember
is that “every causation can be seen in a correlation” too!

There can be confounding & ecologic fallacy, but that’s why we need context—whether masks do stop aerosol transmission, which it does.

📍BREAKING—US sets another new record of 83,000 #COVID19 cases in a single day. This comes after 77,000 cases were reported the day before (itself the highest ever). Smashing the previous record just a day later is insane!

This is only getting worse. 100k/day possible soon.

NEW—Trump’s FDA & Gilead had **IGNORED** the world’s largest Remdesivir #COVID19 trial when FDA rushed its approval. @WHO is visibly irritated that it sent SOLIDARITY results (*zero* Remdesivir benefit) to Gilead on Sept 23 (full paper 28th), but FDA approved it anyway Oct 22nd!
2) You can hear the clear concern in WHO’s chief scientist @doctorsoumya’s voice defending the strength of trial & making the timeline quite clear when Gilead first got SOLIDARITY data showing no benefit. Either Gilead withheld it from FDA—or the FDA knew.
3) Trial was first publicly reported on Oct 16th but, that’s already **3** full weeks after Gilead first got the main results privately from @WHO. So @GileadSciences knew & either failed to disclose to FDA, or FDA looked the other way. Which is it? Journalists please investigate.
