QUESTION: Why are women and girls are more essential than ever to U.S. national security? We asked @GirlSecurity_ to lay out the reasons. Follow this thread.
ANSWER: "National security is the most important common cause, but norms, bias, and discrimination continue to shape the roles girls and women play in security, despite women’s longstanding contributions.
Women remain underrepresented in national security. While increasing the number of women in national security alone will not remedy shortcomings or shortfalls across sectors, it creates a stronger foundation upon which long-needed advancements can succeed.
Increasing the number of women in national security requires empowering girls. Girl Security is the first organization based outside of Washington, D.C. to engage girls from diverse regions and backgrounds.
Empowering girls with learning, training & mentoring not only builds a legion of future women decision makers in n/s, it also empowers girls 2 b more civically engaged in n/s decisions, many of which have defined America, determined who wields powers & shaped the world order.
National security threats are becoming more diffuse and pervasive, and girls are on the frontlines, particularly in the digital domain. America’s citizenry and a future workforce must be more innovative and resilient.
Girls adapt to security challenges from childhood to adulthood. They experience a society in which systems fail to value their security. They innovate amid adversity.
We have not yet seen a world in which girls are empowered or women are valued in parity in security, working alongside their counterparts toward a common purpose. It is due time that we see the value in the negative space and actualize our collective strengths."
