1/9 A rant on why we need to #ReviveMedicine

I am very concerned about the state of medicine for patients and doctors alike. The BUSINESS of medicine has stolen the concepts of both health AND care from our healthcare systems.
2/9
I was just sent this article by a doctor. Whether you're a doctor, a science-type, a patient, or a curious onlooker, I hope reading it pisses you off. It pissed me off.

Is it any wonder that doctors are discouraged? Is it any wonder that patients are losing trust? Quickly.
3/9 Doctors and patients alike are being bombarded by "shiny new treatments". Overdiagnosis and overtreatment is a big problem in both physical and mental health.

And the BUSINESS continues to grow.

And the NUMBER OF PATIENTS continues to grow.
4/9 Doctors and Patients are seeking better outcomes, focusing on health AND care, on prevention AND recovery. Enter Lifestyle Medicine, Integrative Medicine, Functional Medicine, etc.

Why? Because the current system isn't working very well, especially for chronic disease.
5/9 Cue the Propagandists. Folks that want doctors and patients to believe that "sure, healthcare has problems but we don't need flying carpets". Discrediting LM/IM/FM is an attempt to protect the BUSINESS.
6/9 We've been trained to drink the kool-aid. Our doctors know best. Medicine is based on "Science". But ya know what, it doesn't taste very good.

We can keep drinking it, or we can spit it out.
7/9 We've got lots of information and "science" on how to improve health AND care, how to work with patients on prevention AND recovery. Lots of cases of harm to learn from. Lots of cases of recovery and remission to learn from.
8/9 We are ALL consumers. We have in our hands the ability to change the BUSINESS of medicine, to make it about health AND care.

We can #ReviveMedicine. Better hurry, this one seems to be on its last breath.
9/9 Disclaimer: Nowhere in this thread did I disparage doctors. Nor did I suggest the current system is ALL bad. I did mean to suggest it was badly broken, but maybe the focus of the current system is just misdirected.

1/n On RA and naturopathy:

I was diagnosed with RA by a rheumatologist. I checked all the boxes and was put on an Rx cocktail. For life.

I then went to a naturopath. Over a few years, we spent a lot of time together. I learned a lot about myself. I learned a lot about the
2/ impact of lifestyle on our physical health, including food, stress, life experience, etc. She talked about a combination of Rx for symptoms as prescribed, along with not giving up on improving my health. I became an empowered patient.
3/ And yes, she offered some homeopathic supplements as well.

I am immensely grateful. I would not be the man I am today if I did not have this experience.

So when I see heartless academics and other HCPs that don't care about my story, and don't care about countless

Pharma intern: There seem to be a lot of cases of people being harmed by OUR products.

Supervisor: OUR studies indicate they help some people. We can't be distracted by ANECDOTES. Those patients are probably committing LOGICAL FALLACY. Or some other cool name. Ignore them.
Pharma Intern: There seem to be a lot of cases of other safer and more effective health approaches.

Supervisor: OUR studies indicate they help some people. We can't be distracted by ANECDOTES. Marketing will handle the distractions.
Pharma Intern: But shouldn't we try to do what's best for patients?

Supervisor: We spent a lot of money getting that product to market. We're not going to spend more worrying about patients. OUR money is being invested in more products. And marketing of these ones. #ItsABusiness

I've had a few people suggest to me that we should try to get this targeted hit piece retracted. It is very misrepresentative of CAM practitioners as well as patients that utilize CAM. How do we stop this targeted behavior? Letters to the editor a good start.
2/ Before blocking, Jonathan asked what the retraction should be based on? I'll add notes below.

Here's the article:
