How brands differentiate themselves through marketing

When the uninitiated think of marketing the first thing to come to mind is advertising. But Marketing is a lot more than just writing and producing ads.
THREAD
Marketing is at the heart of any business and requires financial, operational, and competitive considerations. This is an introduction to the Four P’s of marketing, also known as a marketing mix.

The Four P’s are:
Product
Place
Promotion
Price
Here are some ways you can use this as you begin to market your business:

1. The Product or service you’re marketing is unique in at least one important way. You’ll need to understand and define your product’s position in the marketplace to know how to sell it.
Some questions you can ask yourself to get at this include:

-Is this is luxury good or a commodity or in-between?
-How is it different from what competitors offer?
-Is it a new category or does it fill an existing need?
2. Place refers to how the product is sold. Understanding place allows you to allocate resources to maximize profits by selling in the proper channels.
To understand Place, ask yourself:

- Where should I sell my product?
- How should I distribute it?
- How much volume can I expect from various channels?
3. Promotion refers to the messaging around selling your product. To understand promotion you have to understand your customers and their motivations. Typical questions to get started include:
- How will I advertise my product (print, online, tv, events)?
- How frequently will I promote it?
- How aware of my product are my customers?
- How loyal are they?
- How can I show the benefits of my product versus competitors?
4. Price takes into account your customer’s willingness and ability to pay, as well as your fixed and variable costs (more about those in a later thread).
You’re not selling in a bubble, so you need to consider:
- Do I price above or below my competitors?
- How much will my customer pay?
- How much do I need to charge to cover my costs?
- How much of the market can I expect to penetrate at a given price?
The marketing mix is a good starting point to launch and sell your product. You have to consider each of these alone, and together. Changing one part of the marketing mix affects the other parts, too.

How Brilliant Marketing Created $100,000,000 Out of Thin Air
[ THREAD ]

Let's go 👇 Image
Yesterday we looked at how companies use the 4 P's of marketing to sell products:

Today let’s look at how Yoplait yogurt launched a new brand, growing to over $100 MN.

We’ll look at this through the lens of the marketing mix, or the 4 P’s of marketing.
While historically Yoplait was the yogurt brand of choice, Greek yogurt and other premium brands had downgraded it in the consumer’s eyes.

Yoplait was seen as mass-market, cheap, and unhealthy.

They launched Oui French yogurt in 2017 to turn things around. Image

The Secret to Visual Branding

[ THREAD ]

Let's go 👇
The big trap people fall into with branding?

Making their brand like every other brand.

Inexperienced marketers look at the style of a company like Apple...
They love the minimal aesthetic. The bold typography. The vivid colors.

Then they appropriate that style for a completely different purpose.

And it's a disaster.

Here's what they don't realize...

The Secret To Next-Level Writing

[ THREAD ]

Let's go 👇
When people come to me for writing advice, most think that they need help writing better sentences.

But, in my experience, most people actually know how to compile decent sentences.
Where they struggle is in *connecting* sentences in a way that keeps readers engaged.

Despite good ideas and strong points, their writing suffers because they fail to clearly *link* concepts.

To overcome this problem...

Why Defiance Sells

[ THREAD ]

Let's go 👇 Image
Defiance is one of the most useful tools in business.

To understand why...

Let's look at the root of all marketing: Storytelling
Every great story has a defiant hero who rejects the laws and constraints that society has imposed.

Why? Because these constraints create dramatic tension by conflicting with what the hero needs to do.

Let's look at a few examples...

How To Pitch Anything

[ THREAD ]

Let's go 👇
Before we dive in, let's examine a key distinction.

A Pitch is not an Offer.

Pitches get you to buy an idea.

Offers get you to buy a product.
A pitch is a mental movie that *primes* people for a later offer.

If a business has a bad pitch, it won't have a good offer.

Pitches first. Offers second.

Now that we've cleared that up...

How To Improve Your Writing 10x

5 Lessons in 5 Tweets

[ THREAD ]

Let's go 👇
1: Omit Extra Words

Bad writing comes from cluttered thinking. Your readers don't have time to wade through needless verbiage to locate your point.

1. Decide what you want to say
2. Say it
3. Cut it in half

You'll become a stronger writer when you stop trying to sound smart.
2: Write Like You Speak

School gives us vocabulary lists to memorize and rewards us for using fancy words in essays.

Many of us have a hard time unlearning this habit. But your writing will improve 10X if you use a more conversational style.
