Amur falcons are back to India. Let me share story, a bird which crosses Himalayas enroute to India from Mongolia & Arabian Sea for going to Africa. This bird covers 22,000 KMs flying. One of the nature’s amazing wonder. In Nagaland they come in hundreds of thousands & stay. 1/n
While we were inside. Irang an Amur falcon was radio tagged by WII in Manipur. It went to South Africa, returned back to China. On October it again started journey. And in one year it covered 29,000 kms & back to Manipur. Which machine can beat that.
In one study three Amur falcons were radio tagged named as Naga, Pangati & Wokha. By 13 November they left Nagaland & by 25th December all three were in Southern Africa. With some halts in India. They took longest over water journey. Imagine the distance they covered flying.
”Naga”, flew from Nagaland in India to Somalia in eastern Africa, for five days and 10 hours non-stop and covering a distance of some 5,600km. Since a million Amur falcons arrive in Nagaland, it is also called as Amur falcon capital of the world.
Amur falcons were hunted extensively once. By raising awareness about their role & route of migration and involving communities their conservation work is paying good dividends. This is only one such bird, in nature birds migrate & all needs protection.
This one is Naga. They travel from eastern Asia all the way to southern Africa and back every year (as map shared above). What a journey this bird is taking. They cross high Himalayas (special adaptations) & rest in India for their further journey. PC Nick Williams.
Till 2012 they were hunted in thousands in Nagaland. Which became a huge issue. Later govts, community members & NGOs came forward to conserve them. Now Nagaland happily welcome them & even celebrate Amur Falcon festival every year. A great success story. PC Nagalandpost
Amur Falcun named Hakizhe was tagged in Nagaland in Oct 2016 by Wildlife Institute of India, Which was tracked in Dwarka #Gujarat on 14th May 2017.
Hakizhe travelled journey of 5600 kms in only 5 days and 10 hours at that time to reach dwarka.

During a significant project of DRDO, the work pressure was high. A scientist approached his boss – & asked to leave early that day considering he had promised his children to take them to an exhibition.
Boss generously granted permission, the scientist got back to work. 1/3
When he did, he lost the track of time & forgot to leave early. He reached home, feeling guilty, looked for his kids, but could only find his wife.
He asked for kids, and to his surprise she told him: “your manager was here around 5:15 and he took kids for exhibition!”. 2/3
Apparently, Boss had been observing the scientist and noticed that he might never realise he had to go home. Feeling for the kids, he decided to take the kids in his stead.
India will soon be the fourth country to have hypersonic missiles. After US, Russia & China only.
Congratulations to all scientists. 1/n
Hypersonic missiles fly with more than 5 Mach speed. Which means five times speed of sound. Supersonic is more than Mach 1.
They use SCRAMJET engines. Higher version of RAMJET engines, in short Supersonic Combustion RAMJET (SC+RAMJET) engines. 2/n
Ramjet engine works on principle of Ram effect. Which in simple terms utilising vehicular speed for compression.
But for combustion speed need to be slowed down. Combustion at Sub sonic speed. Which means during expansion there is a check on velocity of vehicle. 3/n
They are ecosystem doctors. But in recent years we have lost 90-99% of vulture population in India. Eg white-backed vulture faced a 99.9% decrease whereas slender-billed & long-billed vulture faced 97% decrease.
Many reasons for their decline. But prime reason behind reduction in Vulture population in India was use of Diclofenac in cattle drugs. This cause acute renal failure & they die.
That is why now diclofenac is banned in cattle drugs.
Many conservation breeding programs are also ongoing with good results from Pinjor to Buxa. Where they are raised & later released in wild.
Some of them are equipped with Platform Terminal Transmitters for tracking & to keep a close watch. For study also.
Today is Earth #OvershootDay. It is a day when we already consumed all the biological resources that Earth can renew during the entire year.
Now we need 1.6 #earths to meet our annual demand. Alarming !!
We all consume un-equal resources. Example if all population consumed like USA then overshoot day would by 14th March. It shows inequality prevailing around the globe. This year we are able to push overshoot day due to pandemic led low consumption. But we need long term plans.
So if all consumed like USA we needed 5 earth to cater the demand. Developing countries are consuming less. Post pandemic we have a chance to take a new & sustainable path. To push the day.
