We've collaborated with @MarshallProj to tackle one of the most important issues facing America: the broken prison system. Here's a small sample of what our reporting has uncovered. A thread:
What programs could've helped people stay out of prison? Nearly 2,400 respondents gave us answers like affordable housing, vocational problems, and "anyone to give a shit". slate.com/news-and-polit…
#DefundThePolice became a rallying cry during and after this year's Black Lives Matter protests. Did the movement also reach the nation's incarcerated population? slate.com/news-and-polit…
The majority of the 745,000 people held in local jails can vote, but few actually do. Why? slate.com/news-and-polit…

The CDC warned Americans today that the Coronavirus is likely to become a "pandemic", calling it a "question of when".

How did we get here? Tracking the past few months of Covid-19 and Coronavirus news, a Thread:
Our first Coronavirus-related piece dates from January 22, when China announced a partial quarantine of Wuhan. At least 17 people had died by this point: slate.com/news-and-polit…
Just two days later, the official death toll had risen to 26, with more than 830 confirmed cases in China. We noted that the country may be downplaying the crisis and criticized the government’s lack of transparency in addressing the outbreak: slate.com/news-and-polit…

Slate has obtained an exclusive leaked audio recording that reveals how state lawmakers are taught to trash evidence, avoid the word gerrymander, and more. slate.com/news-and-polit…
The audio comes from a closed-door panel called “How To Survive Redistricting” in which the architects and defenders of some of the most notorious gerrymanders and voter suppression plans of this decade speak candidly. slate.com/news-and-polit…
During the session, the legislators were advised to treat redistricting as “political adult blood sport” and trash potential evidence before it can be discovered through litigation. slate.com/news-and-polit…

1/ There’s a lot more to this story than you may think, and it may actually serve as a cautionary tale for those championing the #GreenNewDeal. 🌿

Our daily news podcast WHAT NEXT explained it all just last week. We’ll dive into it in this thread. 👇

3/ Ok, so back to the story. It’s important to know that transportation is now our number one greenhouse gas problem.

“To me it’s kind of the elephant in the room and no one wants to address it,” says Slate’s @henrygrabar.

BREAKING: Previously undisclosed statements obtained by Slate raise questions about the travel ban’s legality, just as the Supreme Court gets set to rule in Trump v. Hawaii. slate.com/news-and-polit…
2/ The ban prevents nearly all individuals from several majority-Muslim countries from entering the U.S. unless they receive special waivers. In court, government lawyers have justified the ban by pointing to this process of offering “case-by-case” waivers to deserving applicants
3/ Slate has obtained statements from two consular officers tasked with implementing the travel ban. Those statements appear to contradict the government’s description of the waiver process. One called the process a “fraud.” slate.com/news-and-polit…
