4oz of my fave black bean & sesame pasta:
46 g protein
26 g fiber
60% of DV for iron and potassium
30% of DV for calcium

🙃
@ChristianAssad you will love this one!
For anyone interested in starting to eat bean pastas - often I recommend starting with chickpea pasta or lentil pasta.
I think the texture is most similar to traditional pasta.
As you advance in your bean pasta journey, you can increase protein & fiber content with black bean, edamame, or mung bean variations. They taste less like traditional pasta but are delicious in their own way! High in protein & fiber.
Yes I have all of these in my kitchen. Actually I have more 😂

I am available for a bean pasta Ted Talk when you are ready @TEDTalks

I’m just going to say it - across the country, MANY physician trainees weren’t allowed to say anything about lack of PPE during the peak at their hospitals. Some got sick. Some have died.

Residents & fellows must be protected as we go into winter & COVID #’s increase again.
All physicians, nurses, all healthcare providers should be protected. But trainees are often muzzled, have no negotiation power, and are scared to speak up as they use the same mask for weeks on end. This can’t happen again.
During the peak of the pandemic in the northeast, we had a group text of over 200 cardiology fellows across the US. This wasn’t an uncommon concern. Hoping this time around there is a higher level of safety for everyone in training

Why I’m the most disliked vegan doctor, by vegans.

Intellectual honesty doesn’t always make you popular.

A thread.
First of all, I’m vegan. It’s my personal choice. Veganism is a lifestyle, not a diet. I don’t eat animal products, wear leather, and I do everything I can to minimize my harm to sentient beings.
But when it comes to my patients, I’m a cardiologist first. This means, I HAVE to follow the science. I cannot restrict myself to the dietary dogma in the vegan community that low fat plant based diets are the only way to eat.

I am obsessed with this lentil-walnut “taco meat” I made for our burritos. IT IS SO FREAKING GOOD!! 😍 I topped it with my homemade vegan sour cream (made from tofu), added tomato, avocado, chives. And calorie for calorie, it has more protein than regular taco meat!
Here’s the recipe:

3/4 cup chopped walnut
2 cup uncooked brown lentils
2-3 tbsp olive oil
1/4 cup chopped white onion
¼ cup chopped red onion
As many garlic cloves as you would like (I use a zillion)
2-3 tsp smoked paprika
2-3 tsp chili powder
2 tbsp chopped chives
1 tsp salt
Lentils:
Rinse the lentils.  Remember when boiling them – your water to lentil ratio is always 1 part lentil to 3 parts water. So to cook 2 cup of lentils, you’ll combine it with 6 cups of water in a pot. Do you have to boil the water first? No!

For anyone ranting about COVID and protests... I’m a doctor who cares a lot about COVID. I care about human life more than anything. But I agree with the protests. And I want to share my perspective.
I’ve literally watched patients DIE of COVID. My niece has Leukemia and is immunocompromised. I care VERY much about the spread of coronavirus and care deeply about the health and safety of protestors. Especially in black populations that have been disproportionately effected.
BUT we all just watched George Floyd get MURDERED. He is one of MANY black people who have suffered from systemic racism and social injustice that has plagued our country for far too long. Yes, many of us who haven’t been, should have been fighting this long ago.

The first time I ran a code in the ICU, it was the nurse who kept me calm, and helped me bring the patient back to life. (She even whispered in my ear, “I know you can do this”)
The first time I did a central line by myself... I wasn’t alone at all, bc a nurse was there by my side from start to finish.
The first time I cried because I lost a patient, a nurse was there to hug me and remind me that “all the good doctors still care about their patients.”
The first (and only) time I lost control of a bleed when pulling a balloon pump in a really unstable patient (my fingers went totally numb after holding pressure for 90 minutes), a nurse was there to jump in and help me.

Doctors, nurses & ALL healthcare providers need adequate Personal Protective Equipment so they can treat patients without spreading COVID & also safely protect themselves.

Everyone can help us! Here is how:

CC: @DarilynMoyer @ACPinternists

Please share w/ everyone you can🙏
@ACPinternists has contacted President Trump and requested the Defense Production Act be invoked to require manufacturers to make ALL PPE for physicians and other health care workers.

“Such action is needed to address the COVID-19-induced shortage of masks, gowns, gloves, and other PPE that put frontline medical professionals who are caring for patients at grave risk of becoming infected and sickened by the virus, and then spreading it to colleagues,
