Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update. More than 21,800 people have recovered from COVID-19. In the last 24 hrs we have ID’d 477 cases & conducted more than 12K tests. 130 people are in hospital, including 18 in ICU. We are monitoring hospital capacity closely. (1/10)
I must also report 5 new deaths. Every death, caused by COVID-19 or something else, is a terrible loss for those who loved that person. I offer my heartfelt condolences to everyone who has lost a loved one to COVID or any other illness during these difficult months. (2/10)
There are active alerts or outbreaks in 249 schools, with 730 cases total. This includes 111 schools on outbreak including 45 on the watch list. So far, in-school transmission has likely occurred in 87 schools. Of these, 48 have seen only 1 new case occur as a result. (3/10)
Starting Mon. there will be a new symptoms list for Albertans under 18, incl the daily checklist for students in school & all childcare settings. Thank you to parents who have been using the checklist every day. (4/10)
We’re removing runny nose & sore throat from children’s list of mandatory isolation symptoms. Last week, less than 1% of children w/only sore throat & less than .5% w/only runny nose tested + for COVID-19. This change is only for those with no known exposure. (5/10)
If a child has had close contact with a COVID case in the last 14 days, a runny nose or sore throat are enough to recommend testing & the child would need to continue to stay home in isolation. (6/10)
Any child w/even 1 core isolation symptom (cough, fever, shortness of breath & a new core isolation symptom of loss of taste or smell) must still isolate for 10 days or have a neg. test result & resolved symptoms before resuming activities. (7/10)
If a child has only 1 of the other symptoms on the list, keep them home & monitor for 24hrs. If improved, testing isn’t needed & they can resume activities when they feel well. If 2+ symptoms, they should get tested & stay home until symptoms go away or they test neg. (8/10)
For example if a child only has a headache, they should stay home for the day. If they improve, they can go to school when they feel well. But if they have a headache & a runny nose, they should stay home & get tested or stay home until the symptoms go away. (9/10)
Today’s changes align with BC, ON & QC. After they updated their lists, they did not see a corresponding COVID-19 transmission increase in schools. Like with all public health measures, we will continue reviewing emerging evidence & will update our approach as needed. (10/10)

Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update. We have crossed a tipping point in managing spread & we’re losing the balance we’ve been seeking. COVID-19 hospitalization growth is not above our trigger point of 5% but we must address the situation we are in now. (1/11)
This weekend’s #s tell the story. We ID’d, on average, 480 cases/day over the weekend. Fri saw 364 cases w/16K+ tests conducted. We ID’d 572 new cases Sat & completed 17K tests. Yesterday had 504 cases & almost 12,700 tests. 118 people are in hospital, incl 16 in ICU. (2/11)
Sadly, I must report 7 more deaths. Many are struggling with the loss of loved ones, from COVID-19 or other causes. We must change the trend of COVID-19 spread to prevent more losses & growth in hospitals & ICU. (3/11)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update. 19,500 Albertans have now recovered, almost 850 more since Friday. We completed 13K+ tests in the last 24 hours and identified 323 new cases. Our provincial positivity rate was about 2.5%. (1/10)
116 people are in hospital incl 16 in ICU. Our compounded daily COVID-19 hospitalization rise is 3.1%; 5% is our trigger threshold. The rise appears to be driven by a # of factors incl an increase in case counts & hospital outbreaks. 23% of COVID-19 ICU beds are in use. (2/10)
I am sad to report 1 new death. We’ve lost many Albertans to many different causes since the pandemic began. Each was a person – not a number. All of us who know someone grieving a loss can reach out & offer support. It is 1 of many ways each 1 of us can make a difference. (3/10)
I’ve heard criticism that Order 33-2020 was issued over the weekend. This timing was not to hide information from Albertans but to ensure school authorities knew about the order before it came into effect today (August 31). (1/8) open.alberta.ca/publications/c…
However, I understand the concerns, especially as we move forward quickly to ensure accurate information for Albertans. Effective immediately, my goal will be to post new orders Monday through Thursday and I will share when they have been posted via social media. (2/8)
My team and I continue to work closely with school authorities to provide accurate information and evidence to support the back to school experience for children, parents, teachers and administrators. (3/8)
Here is a summary thread of today’s #COVID19AB update. 9,754 Albertans have recovered. The active number of cases has risen to 1,191. We continue to identify high numbers of new cases: 97 on Friday, 67 on Saturday, 74 on Sunday and 65 on Monday from more than 34,000 tests. (1/7)
Sadly, I must also report five additional deaths since Friday, including three at the Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre. My sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones & sympathies to those who have suffered severe complications. (2/7)
One frequent question is why we closed classes in the spring, when there were fewer active cases, but are resuming in-person classes now. We now know much more about this virus. (3/7)
Here is a summary thread of today’s #COVID19AB update. 9,100+ Albertans have recovered. We’ve conducted 8,700 tests in the last 24hrs & identified 113 new cases. 91 people are in hospital, 18 in ICUs. To date, more than 676,000 tests have been performed on 566,000 people. (1/9)
Sadly I must report 5 new deaths, all at the Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre. This is a stark example of the devastation this virus can cause. I offer my condolences to the families & friends of these individuals & to all who have lost loved ones during this time. (2/9)
We continue to expand & improve testing capacity. AHS is deploying more staff to assessment centres, extending hours to meet demand and hiring more staff for the fall. (3/9)
Here is a summary thread of today’s #COVID19AB update. More than 8,500 Albertans have recovered. 106 people are hospitalized with 21 in ICUs. There are 114 new cases out of about 8,200 new tests. Two more Albertans have died. I extend my condolences. (1/9)
Our acute care use is approaching the highest number of admissions on any 1 day we’ve had – 113 overall admissions on April 30 and 23 ICU admissions on May 1. This needs to be a wake up call. I am very concerned by these numbers. (2/9)
On July 9, we had 590 active cases - today nearly 1,300. 7 Albertans were in ICU 2 weeks ago, now we have triple that. 24 in hospital are under the age of 60, including 7 between 20-39. While younger people have a lower risk of severe outcomes, that does not mean 0 risk. (3/9)
