Reading Tip:

β€’ Book O' Clock πŸ•°οΈ

Designate a specific period of time that belongs solely to reading books.

Here's how to apply it πŸ‘‡
In life, when there's an interaction we want to do, we schedule a specific time for it:

β€’ 7 am workout with a trainer
β€’ 4 pm meeting with a coworker
β€’ 7 pm hangout session with friends

So why not do the same for reading?
Schedule a specific time to read every day.

It could be as short as 15 minutes or as long as an hour (if you want to read more go for it).

The key is to block off a period of time where the sole purpose of that time is to do one thing–READ.
Take this exercise seriously.

Pick a time right now (start by blocking off 15 minutes) and add it to your calendar.

If you think you may forget, set a reminder for it.

Here's my Book O' Clock time:
I usually go to bed at 11:30pm-12am.

Starting today 11pm will be my Book O' Clock time.

Meaning I'll read every night (except Fri/Sat) for at least 30 minutes.

I set a reminder on my phone to go off at 11pm to tell me to put my phone on airplane mode & turn off the wifi.
Since my phone & laptop will be off, the chances of me getting distracted or something interrupting my reading time will be almost zero.

Plus, reading is a great way to wind down for the night and relax before going to bed.

When is your Book O' Clock time? πŸ•°οΈ

Inspired by @jackbutcher, @thisiskp_, and many others, I thought I'd share how I'm building Alex & Books in public!

First, let's start with the end goal:

β€’ Make a living by reading books, inspiring others to read, and helping them become better readers
Here's the plan:

1) Grow audience through social media

2) Move audience to owned platforms (newsletter, podcast, etc.)

3) Monetize through courses, merch, & books

4) Use a portion of the profits to give books to those in need
Here are my current audience stats:

β€’ Instagram = 63.2k
β€’ Twitter = 13.4k
β€’ Newsletter = 2.7k
β€’ YouTube = .6k
β€’ TikTok = 1.5k
β€’ Podcast = 22k

Here's how I'm prioritizing the growth:

1) Newsletter
2) Podcast
3) Twitter
4) YouTube
5) Instagram
6) TikTok

A Fun Reading Challenge:

β€’ The Four Seasons of Reading 🌷 🌻 πŸ‚ ❄️

Every season people spend hours and hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars decorating their home.

What if we did the same thing with books?
I don't mean decorating your bookshelf with pumpkins & spiderwebs for fall.

I mean decorating your library by reading different books for each season like so:

Fall: πŸ‚

β€’ Dracula by Bram Stoker
β€’ Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
β€’ The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
Winter: ❄️

β€’ The Snowman by Raymond Briggs
β€’ A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
β€’Β The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis

Spring: 🌷

β€’ Emma by Jane Austen
β€’ Middlemarch by George Eliot
β€’ Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by C.S. Lewis

If life, you need friends who will push you out of your comfort zone.

Two people that have really helped me are:

β€’ @amlewis4
β€’ @brandonthezhang

Two months ago, they explained to me the importance of taking my newsletter seriously.

Why?
Although social media is a great platform to reach people, it's all "rented land."

You never know when Twitter, Instagram, etc may ban you or change the algorithm.

Instead, you want to build on land you own AKA your website, podcast, & email list.

But why email specifically?
Email lets YOU go to your audience instead of your audience having to come to you.

Instead of waiting for people to knock on your door, you can go knock on theirs & talk with them.

Before meeting Ari & Brandon, I wasn't taking my newsletter seriously.

And it showed...

How a single book changed Matthew McConaughey's life forever

(thread) 🧡

[Source: @tferriss podcast with @McConaughey]
Matthew was a stellar student at the University of Texas at Austin with a 3.82 GPA. He was dead set on becoming a defense attorney.

However, near the end of his sophomore year, he was
taking a lot of liberal arts classes to fulfill his degree requirements.
Around that time, Matthew was writing a lot of short stories and became fascinated by storytelling. But, he didn't feel confident in pursuing it further.

Even after a phone call with a close friend who encouraged Matthew to pursue storytelling or acting, he waved it off.
