“How a fake persona laid the groundwork for a Hunter Biden conspiracy deluge” via @BrandyZadrozny / @oneunderscore__ / @NBCNews

We’re not surprised.

Read this thread to find out why… 1/

When the Committee received the @StateDept records that were meant to smear the Bidens, we discovered, of course, they were a nothingburger, but we did find something interesting. 2/ foreignaffairs.house.gov/press-releases…
We were able to pinpoint where and when the Hunter Biden-Burisma conspiracy theory started. It was in December 2015 in a Russia-controlled Crimean city (it’s on page 3). 3/ foreignaffairs.house.gov/_cache/files/9…
Everything since then—Trump’s shakedown of Ukraine that led to impeachment, the sham Senate investigation, the laptop, this fake dossier—all had its origins nearly five years ago at the hands of Russian trolls aiming to smear the former Vice President. 4/
So whoever is pushing this nonsense in the remaining days before the election, just remember: it’s Russian propaganda, and anyone who repeats it is helping Putin undermine American democracy. 5/5

🧵A THREAD:
Chairman @RepEliotEngel: The failed May 3rd raid in #Venezuela looked like a bad Jack Ryan episode, but it’s no laughing matter. Anything that further delays a democratic transition is truly heartbreaking for the #Venezuelan people. (1/8)
The best and only way forward is full and complete transparency about the raid, so we can focus on what really matters – alleviating Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis and paving the way for a return to democracy. (2/8)
Last Tuesday, @HouseForeign asked the @StateDept to provide our staff with an immediate briefing on the failed raid. A week later, the Committee still has not received this briefing nor any indication of if/when it will take place. (3/8)

Chairman @RepEliotEngel: @WOLA_org is right. As Latin American governments work to combat #COVID19, we must make sure that human rights are respected and the most vulnerable communities are taken care of. (1/5)
Enforcing social distancing is not an invitation to detain those who violate special curfew orders.

In El Salvador, 1,200+ Salvadorans have been arbitrarily detained for violating curfew. This clearly goes too far. (2/5)
The interim #Bolivian government should not be threatening to use the pandemic as a means to incarcerate people on ambiguous charges like “disinforming”.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights is right to express concerns about this law. (3/5)

CHAIRMAN @RepEliotEngel ON HIS CALL WITH JOHN BOLTON:

"President Trump is wrong that John Bolton didn’t say anything about the Trump-Ukraine Scandal at the time the President fired him. He said something to me."
"After Amb Bolton’s departure as national security advisor, my staff reached out to him at my request. I’ve known Amb Bolton for years; we have a cordial & respectful relationship & I wanted to thank him for his service. I also wanted to ask if he would talk to @HouseForeign."
"He & I spoke by telephone on Sept 23. On that call, Ambassador Bolton suggested to me—unprompted—that the committee look into the recall of Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch. He strongly implied that something improper had occurred around her removal as our top diplomat in Kyiv."

CHM @RepEliotEngel: Documents turned over to @HouseIntel by Lev Parnas include a profoundly alarming dialogue between Mr. Parnas & Robert Hyde, a Trump donor. The messages suggest a possible risk to Amb Marie Yovanovitch’s security in Kyiv before she was recalled from her post.
"Yesterday, @HouseForeign staff contacted @StateDept’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security to flag this info & seek assurances that proper steps have been taken to ensure the security of Embassy Kyiv & that of Ambassador Yovanovitch. I’m grateful for the Department’s quick response..."
"Today, I will convey a formal request for documents, information, and a briefing from senior officials related to this matter. This unprecedented threat to our diplomats must be thoroughly investigated and, if warranted, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

The President's allies are using a leak that originated at the @StateDept to smear a career ambassador and intimidate a key witness in the impeachment inquiry. Let's set the record straight.
@StateDept First of all, the @StateDept should stop leaking documents that Republicans are using to wage misleading attacks on a Department employee & instead produce documents we've subpoenaed & that the White House has told them to hide. We know you’ve got them: intelligence.house.gov/uploadedfiles/…
@StateDept Ambassador Yovanovitch testified that @HouseForeign contacted her in August to discuss the circumstances around her firing. (p.213 of her testimony: docs.house.gov/meetings/IG/IG…)

Current & former @StateDept officials have begun cooperating with the #ImpeachmentInquiry. Based on the first production of materials, it has become immediately apparent why Secretary Pompeo tried to block these officials from providing information.
The texts Amb Volker provided reflect concerns raised by a State Dept official. He expressed concerns that military assistance & meeting between the presidents were being withheld to pressure 🇺🇦 to deliver on Trump’s demand for UKR to launch politically motivated investigations.
