BREAKING: Election officials in Madison County quietly rezoned 2,000 Black & Hispanic voters out of a majority white precinct into an already-majority Black one.

Now, 3,670 mostly non-white voters must share 25 parking spaces and five voting machines. mississippifreepress.org/6492/madison-c…
The Recreation Center Precinct is now overwhelmingly white and serves 2,470 voters with hundreds of parking spaces & 8-10 polling stations.

The Mark Apartments precinct is now overwhelmingly Black, with 3,670 voters, 25 parking spaces & 5 voting machines. mississippifreepress.org/6492/madison-c…
From 2016 in the same location these voters were rezoned:

“The City of Ridgeland, Mississippi, has unlawfully attempted to diminish its minority population by eliminating, through rezoning, at least five apartment complexes ... to curb 'Jackson’s rot.'" mississippifreepress.org/6492/madison-c…
Madison County quietly changed the voting location for these 2,500 voters in July.

But several Black voters told the Mississippi Free Press they never received notice about the change.
mississippifreepress.org/6492/madison-c…
Carol Mann, a candidate, discovered the change while canvassing. She said voters are being moved from a location “with adequate polling stations and adequate parking to an extremely cramped polling place” and that the change will cause “chaos & confusion." mississippifreepress.org/6492/madison-c…
Carol Mann says Madison County Circuit Clerk Anita Wray told her the US Department of Justice ordered her to make the precinct changes after a meeting earlier this year.

But the DOJ hasn't been in charge of overseeing MS precinct changes since 2013. mississippifreepress.org/6492/madison-c…

In one fell swoop, Madison officials packed 42% of District 1's non-white voters into an already majority non-white precinct (map: @wspittman).

In 2018, Democrat Mike Espy won two of the district's precincts. This change almost ensures all but one go GOP.

This was the first time I've ever tried to ask an election commissioner or circuit clerk about a polling precinct change and been told that I must direct all questions to their lawyer.

These are public officials, guys.
mississippifreepress.org/6492/madison-c…
There's no way I could've done this story with the proper context about the demographics of the targeted area without @wspittman's expertise at examining data and census records. Also, he made a helpful infographic to go with this story: mississippifreepress.org/6492/madison-c…
NOTE: As Secretary of State Michael Watson notes here, @MississippiSOS is NOT in charge of relocating polling places.

Mississippi is a bottom-up state for elections/voting, not top-down.

Local elections are important! (Supervisors, circuit clerks, election commissioners, etc).
UPDATE: Madison County has failed not only to notify many voters of the precinct change, but to put up proper signage.

So as of today, the NAACP, League of Women Voters & Common Cause have begun erecting these signs to let voters know about the change. mississippifreepress.org/6492/madison-c…

NEW: “The kingdom of Satan is united. ... We have let the kingdom of darkness advance ahead of us," Lou Engle's organization declared nine years ago when Mississippi rejected the Personhood Amendment.

But in Barrett, they now see a path to "end abortion."
mississippifreepress.org/6324/evangelic…
On Sept. 4, Lou Engle said he began praying for the end of abortion: "If things don’t shift, we could be heading toward a civil war. But I believe God can shift this Supreme Court in these days.”

RBG died two weeks later. Engle calls it "prophetic."

Sen. @CindyHydeSmith: "I’ve never been afraid to stand up for our faith (and) the rights of the unborn ... That’s why (I support) Amy Coney Barrett. She’s a woman of strong faith ... and she’s exactly who we need on our Supreme Court.” mississippifreepress.org/6324/evangelic…

THREAD: The modern evangelical "religious right" began in opposition to Brown v. Board and school integration—not Roe v. Wade. That's why thousands of "Christian" segregation academies popped up all over the South in the 1960s and 1970s. 1/
When SCOTUS decided Roe in 1973, it wasn't an earth-shattering event for evangelicals—some of whose churches still offered doctrinal defenses of abortion.

The history of the modern religious right was later rewritten to start in '73—not '55. 2/
"A 1965 Hattiesburg American article claimed segregation was not the private school's 'only aim' because 'the school will have Bible reading and prayer' & 'stress patriotism, American heritage, constitutional government and the free enterprise system.'" 3/

THREAD: Two days after a White House meeting with Vice President Pence, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves ended the mask mandate, hailing its success at beating back the summer surge & saying he trusted Mississippians would keep masking without gov't force. 1/

A week later, Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said the state's progress in the fight against COVID-19 was "unraveling" as Mississippians "rapidly" abandoned mask use.

Cases quickly spiked; MS reported the worst day since August. 2/

On Thursday, Mississippi reported 1,322 new cases—the most in a single day since the summer peak on July 30.

It was the first time the state had reported 1,000 cases or more since the mask mandate took effect. MS reported 1,100 cases on Friday. 3/

The Eric Trump Foundation told donors their money would go to a kids' cancer charity. Instead...
-$1.2 million went to the Trump Org
-$100k to the Trump Foundation
-$500k to Trump-connected charities, including 4 that paid to host golf tournaments on Trump courses
Forbes reported this story about Eric Trump in 2017, but most Americans have never heard of it.

There have been dozens of one-time reports about Trump kids, including Ivanka and Trump Jr, profiting off the presidency since 2017, but they all fizzle out.

It's telling that some outlets, 2 weeks before the election, are chasing stories about Hunter Biden that they know come from Russian disinfo campaigns like the one that got Trump impeached—and even publishing texts he sent from rehab.

NEW: White Mississippians are now the primary drivers of #COVID19 infections & deaths.

It's a stunning reversal. Early on in the pandemic, Black Mississippians accounted for ~60-70% of cases & deaths.

Now, cases are growing 2x as fast among white people.
mississippifreepress.org/6219/white-mis…
“In the first wave, Black and Brown people, including Choctaw people, bore the brunt of this pandemic. But ever since mid-summer, Black and Brown and Choctaw people stepped up. ... So now it’s time for white people in Mississippi to step up." mississippifreepress.org/6219/white-mis…
Today, Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs told me that "big parts of the white community" have not been as "compliant" in masking and social distancing.

"We have had pretty good uptake by a lot of folks in the Black community," he said. mississippifreepress.org/6219/white-mis…
