If you look at history, mobility has been core to human progress. We are at an inflection point where tech is transforming mobility again, by making it safer, more convenient and cheaper. And Ola is well positioned to build it for India and the world.
We understand how important human mobility is. And we’ve built one of the world’s largest mobility companies. It has always been our ambition to build a world-leading organisation and company and we’re taking an end-to-end view of mobility.
It’s important to change from fossil fuels to clean energy. India is a large two wheeler country and we’ve been working for three years to deliver a clean energy 2-wheeler.
India sells about 20 million two-wheelers a year However, there is a 200 million active two wheeler user base in India and therefore a huge gap. Empowering two-wheeler mobility is key to making this happen.
This is the right time & place for India to create for India & the world. India has talent & manufacturing muscle: particular for two-wheelers. The world is now more receptive to products from India. We’ve done it for the Ola business, & want to do it for the electric business.
Access, traffic, pollution are key mobility challenges. There’s also going to be stronger autonomy in our vehicles. We are going to make our roads and infra smarter. The vehicle paradigm as we know it will change.
Our goal from day One was very clear: We wanted to build an indian institution on the global stage. And we wanted to build something for the long term. We were very clear about doing everything better.
It’s very important to have a strong tech game to compete on the global stage.
India’s youth are ambitious and we have the ability to take on anyone in the world.
India’s ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, 'the whole world as a family’ is different from US and China’s philosophy. And this can be our strength in creating for the global supply chain.
An entrepreneur is driven by hope and positive optimism. If you’re doing it for the right reasons, optimism comes naturally.
Future big opportunities in mobility:
➡️Servicification of mobility (MaaS: mobility as a service)
➡️Transformation of energy tech driving mobility (over a 20-30 year period)
➡️Concept of mobility evolving
➡️Buying and distribution of mobility will change
Driving the future of mobility
➡️We want to play across the entire value chain of mobility
➡️We’re building with a 10+ year vision
➡️Electric vehicles are the future
Technology is always an S curve, and people often underestimate how fast mobility innovations can happen.
Playbook for building an institution:
➡️Don't focus on the operations that you ignore the organisation
➡️Strengthen org structures and culture, consistently
➡️We focus on talent growth and not talent retention
Building an indian startup multinational (the indian ethos)
➡️Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The whole world is a family)
➡️India has been accepting of ideas and extremely empathetic
➡️It’s important to think long term and sustainable growth
Plain simple persistence is the most underrated value of an entrepreneur. It’s very tough to be persistent. If you have an iron-strong will, you will succeed.

“I’m an engineer turned product manager turned accidental VC.”
Key things on building a product startup:
➡️Try not to think of yourself as the customer
➡️Think about why it going to made the customer’s life 10x better
➡️It should be a good idea done really well and not necessarily a great idea done moderately well
